On the eve of her sister's wedding, suburban teenager Samantha (Molly Ringwald) suffers silently as her family forgets her birthday. Even worse, some total dork (Anthony Michael Hall) keeps propositioning her with sophomoric innuendo when she really craves romantic attention from high-school hunk Jake (Michael Schoeffling). Moving from Samantha's family home as it's invaded by outre relatives to a high-school dance where nothing seems to go her way, this bittersweet teen comedy traces the hopes and disappointments of not only Samantha, but also a host of incidental but memorable characters, from a hapless Japanese exchange student to a prom queen and a posse of barely pubescent nerds. A climactic party scene at which these various strata of young America overcome their rigid hierarchies sets the stage for resolutions both tender and torrid.

I felt so much like Sam from the film when I was 16, too! The never-ending crush on the most popular boy, the geek that would never leave you alone, and all the in-crowd groupies that would follow the poplular kids around like lost souls. Oh well, I do wish that a guy like Michael would have surprised me like he did with Sam at the end of the movie. THIS IS A MUST-SEE, 80'S CLASSIC!

John Hughes had a string of hits in the early eighties that for the most part, followed Molly Ringwald, through a series of misadventures in growing up. Among these, 'Sixteen Candles' is vintage Hughes. It observes one Samantha Baker (Ringwald) in her quest to stir the honorable intentions of the most popular boy at school, Jake Ryan (Michael Shoeffling) who - no, can it be - turns out to be a genuinely nice guy at heart. Samantha is mortified when her parents, in preparation of their other daughter¿s wedding, completely forget that it¿s her sweet sixteen. But that humiliation pales in comparison when the geek, Farmer Ted (Anthony Michael Hall) pegs Samantha to be his date at a high school dance. Unable to shake Ted, Samantha agrees to a truce by letting Ted show off a pair of her underwear to his equally geeky friends. This, of course, confuses Jake who, by this time has discovered that Samantha is attracted to him. The film also features Gedde Watanabe as the irrepressible Long Duck Dong ¿ an exchange student who gets a crash course in heavy partying from his American friends. The screenplay pulled out all the stops for comedy and sweetness and the film - all hype and nonsense - brilliantly captures that snapshot of 80's Americana in which every teenager within viewing distance desperately wants to fit in. Universal's anamorphically enhanced DVD is a disappointment. The film suffers from faded colors, low contrast, weak black levels, color bleeding and an incredible loss of fine detail in the image throughout. Flesh tones are pasty. Age related artifacts including chips, scratches and jump cuts in editing are glaringly obvious. In addition - night scenes suffer from a near blackout characteristic in which a completely dark viewing room is needed just to get by. The audio, remixed to 5.1 in Dolby and DTS is barely stereo, with no separation among the channels except in its music tracks. There are no extras.

This movie brings back pleasant and neurotic high school memories. As neurotic as any segment of society is, the most neurotic segment is high school. I love Long Duck Dong, the Nerds, and the others.

When I saw "Sixteen Candles,"I couldn't help, but to watch it over a million times.I didn't watch it over and over in order to see Jake Ryan, but it suprised me how much I could relate to Sam Baker.Like,in the movie, she's a typical high school student who seems like she can't fit in and going through the typical awkward years of being a teenager.I considered this a great movie and an outstanding chick flick!(Laughs)

What a great movie! Love it to pieces! I'm not 16 yet, but I anticipate the year b/c of this movie. Who doesn't expect Ted and Sam to finally hook up? I never really admired that Ryan. It's so typical for her to fall in love with the culest senior in school. But I love her grandma Helen! Everything is soooo perky!

Oooo, I've been waiting for this to come out on DVD! I reminisce of a time when I was a teenager and yearned for a wardrobe as cool as Molly Ringwalds, and although my boyfriends looked mostly like Farmer Ted, I was hoping for a Jake Ryan! Be sure to keep your eyes on the DJ in the background as the dance scene opens. I pointed this out to my husband and he couldn't stop laughing.

This is one of my favorite movies cause it follows a realistic teen star in a manner that is pure 80's. the movie is a classic and funny in everyway. and who can hate a movie that has a hunk like Jake Ryan. You feel for all of these characters cause everyone can relate to each situation!

This DVD title has been encoded so as to force the viewer into watching a series of commericals featuring other products offered by the distributor. Without using unconvention methods (ripping, etc) of bypassing such content, there is no way to skip ahead to the root menu of the Film. Excellent movie! Poor DVD formatting.
