Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
The third season of the teen-superhero drama Smallville opens with "Exile," and Clark (Tom Welling) -- still under the influence of a red-kryptonite ring he received at the end of Season 2 -- is on a crime rampage in Metropolis. Jonathan Kent (John Schneider) realizes he needs temporary powers in order to battle against his son and return him to Smallville, and he gets them from Jor-El (the voice of Terence Stamp, Superman II's evil General Zod). As for Clark's best friend, Lex (Michael Rosenbaum), he deals with inner demons after crash-landing his private jet on a deserted island. The antagonistic father/son dynamic of Lionel (the amazing John Glover) and Lex continues in "Phoenix," when Lex claims Lionel caused the plane crash. Superman fans should keep their ears open this season for several references to future occurrences in both the comics and the movies. In "Whisper," Clark is blinded by a heat ray's backfire, marking the first appearance of the glasses he will later use to hide his identity as Superman. Clark and Lana (Kristin Kreuk) are affected by mind control from a mysterious lab in "Delete," where we also learn that Chloe's (Allison Mack) cousin is Lois Lane. Michael McKean portrays an early incarnation of journalist Perry White, future editor of the The Daily Planet, in "Perry." Other guest stars this season include Patrick Bergin in "Shattered," taking over the role of Morgan Edge from Rutger Hauer (he had plastic surgery, it’s explained); and Christopher Reeve makes his final appearance as billionaire Dr. Virgil Swann in "Legacy." Notable episodes include: "Extinction," wherein Clark is shot with a kryptonite bullet; "Velocity," in which Jonathan begins to suffer the physical aftereffects of the power deal he made with Jor-El; and the two-part season finale, "Forsaken" and "Covenant," wherein Clark decides to reveal the truth about who he is to Lana.
