Overview

With their daunting, often abrasive music and fierce sense of creative individuality, Sonic Youth has never been your typical major-label rock band, and this collection of music videos the group made during its first 12 years with DGC Records (spanning the albums Goo through Murray Street) speaks of the group's attentive, hands-on approach to documenting its legacy. All the videos on Sonic Youth: Corporate Ghost have been transferred to disc in their original aspect ratios with nearly all of them appearing in the full-frame ratio of 1.33:1. The audio for all tracks has been re-mastered in 48k/24-bit format, and they appear on this disc in uncompressed PCM stereo, with much of this material sounding better than it ever has before, either in video or audio formats. With the exception of three of the later period videos, all the clips feature commentary tracks from the members of Sonic Youth, as well as occasional onscreen introductions or postscripts, while 14 of them also feature additional commentaries from directors, cast members, or other participants. As if this weren't enough, the band has also included a handful of bonus videos (most notably Todd Haynes' original cut for his "Disappearer" clip and a hilarious fan-made tribute in which the band is portrayed by sock puppets), a video for "Ono Soul" from Thurston Moore's solo album Psychic Hearts, a VHS-shot "fan letter" in which a genuine teenage Sonic Youth fan decorates her bedroom wall with a mural recreating the cover to Goo, a look at Spike Jonze's photos from his shoots with the band (with Jonze narrating), and appreciations of the group from a number of friends and collaborators. One of the directors interviewed on this DVD says that Sonic Youth approached their collaboration as if they were making a short independent film rather than an MTV-bound rock video, and the quality of this release (produced in part by Sonic Youth themselves) speaks volumes about the band's attitude toward the people they've worked with. Made with great care and respect, Sonic Youth: Corporate Ghost isn't just a collection of remarkable sounds and images, but a tribute to the friends and filmmakers who helped them along the way, and the fans who helped give this material an audience.
