Overview

A&E Entertainment's third set of Space 1999, the British television series from the mid-'70s that starred Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, comes to DVD. Nothing is different with set number two. The overall quality leaves quite a bit to be desired, but fans will probably still be happy they were released at all. Each set has two volumes with six episodes, which run about 50 minutes each. This set features "Collision Course, "Death's Other Domain, "The Full Circle, "End of Eternity, "War Games, and "The Last Enemy." All are presented full frame as originally shown on television, but a lack of necessary restoration work really shows. Image quality is decent, but a large amount of grain and a lack of sharp detail really stand out and are rather annoying. The sound is a two-channel mono and is no more or less than would be expected. Dialogue is clear and distortion-free, but lacks any surround material, which would have been nice to hear through a remastered soundtrack. As with the previous sets, the extras are a disappointment. All that is offered are a few production photos and some behind-the-scenes shots. They don't amount to much, and it makes one wonder if there were any additional materials available that could have been used. Still, credit has to be given that these episodes have made it to DVD at all.

Barnes & Noble
The ambitious Space: 1999 was produced in 1975 by British sci-fi TV legends Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, the husband-and-wife puppeteer auteur team that gave the world "supermarionation" and such cherished kids TV staples as Thunderbirds. The series posited a base camp on the Moon, Alpha, that was the unwitting victim of a devastating explosion that occurs when all of Earth's atomic waste -- sent up to and plunged into the lunar surface because it seemed like a good idea at first -- blows up. This sends the third rock from the sun's sole natural satellite careering off into uncharted space, with the waste-station team along for the ride. The Anglo-American cast is led by the erstwhile Mission: Impossible partners and off-screen husband-and-wife Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, with many British TV greats filling guest roles from time to time. Remastered from the original 35 mm prints, DVD Set 3 includes: "Collision Course," "Death's Other Domini," "The Full Circle," "End of Eternity," "War Games," and "The Last Enemy."
