Overview

The sixth set from A&E Entertainment for the mid-'70s science fiction series Space 1999 shows little signs of difference from the previous releases. While consistency might be welcome if the quality were present, in this case it's simply proof that either the source material is irreparable or the time wasn't spent to improve what was available. Each set has two volumes with six episodes, which run about 50 minutes each. This set features "The Rules of Luton, "The Mark of Archanon, Brian the Brain, "New Adam, New Eve, "The A B Chrysalis, and "Catacombs of the Moon." All are presented full frame as originally shown on television. Image quality, as with the previous sets, is certainly watchable, but regularly shows scratches and dirt, evidence that little restoration was attempted. Sound, as it's been on all the discs, is in two-channel mono. Though obviously this series was made for television, the lack of any surround material keeps the episodes from having a more cinematic feel. As for extras, they're fairly limited. Along with some production photographs that have been on all the discs, there are the same television plugs that were on Space 1999 Set 5, and an altogether too-brief promo for the second season that includes some scenes from an episode and a brief segment of the miniature work.

Barnes & Noble
Suppose Earth sent all its atomic waste to the Moon and, one day, that waste exploded, sending the third rock from the sun's sole natural satellite careering off into uncharted space? In 1975, this ambitious notion fueled Space: 1999, a series produced by British sci-fi TV legends Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, the husband-and-wife puppeteer auteur team that gave the world "supermarionation" and such cherished kids TV staples as Thunderbirds. Rather than imagining the devastation that would result on Earth, though, the Andersons made the space station Moonbase Alpha the centerpiece of their program, tracing the trials of the waste-station team sent uwittingly off on Mr. Moon's Wild Ride. The Anglo-American cast is led by the erstwhile Mission: Impossible partners and off-screen husband-and-wife Martin Landau and Barbara Bain, with many British TV greats filling guest roles from time to time. Remastered from the original 35 mm prints, A&E's sixth DVD release includes: "The Rules of Luton," "The Mark of Archanon," "Brian the Brain," "New Adam, New Eve," "The AB Chrysalis," and "Catacombs of the Moon."
