Speed Racer

The Matrix masterminds Andy and Larry Wachowski usher anime icon Tatsuo Yoshida's classic 1960s-era hit into the new millennium with this family-friendly story of a young racecar driver who takes on the mysterious Racer X in a custom-made, gadget-loaded speed machine named the Mach 5. Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) is the kind of driver that every wheelman wishes he could be: a born winner whose unbeatable combination of aggression, instinct, and fearlessness always finds him crossing the checkered flag with a comfortable lead. In Speed Racer's mind, the only driver who could present him with any real challenge is his late brother -- the legendary Rex Racer. Rex died in a heated cross-country rally known as The Crucible many years ago, and now his younger sibling is driven to fulfill the legacy that Rex left behind. To this day, Speed Racer is fiercely loyal to family. It was Speed Racer's father, Pops Racer (John Goodman), who designed the unbeatable Mach 5, and even a lucrative offer from racing giants Royalton Industries isn't enough to get the young ace to break his family ties. Upon turning down Royalton's (Roger Allam) astronomical offer, Speed Racer makes the shocking discovery that the outcomes of the biggest races are being predetermined by a handful of powerful moguls who pad their profits by manipulating the drivers. Realizing that his career would be ruined if word of the fix gets out, Royalton vows that the Mach 5 will never make it to another finish line. Now, the only way for Speed Racer to save the family business and beat Royalton at his own game will be to win the very same race that claimed his brother's life so many years ago. In order to accomplish that formidable feat, however, Speed Racer will not only have to rely on his family and the aid of his longtime girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), but form a tenuous alliance with his longtime rival -- the mysterious Racer X (Matthew Fox) -- as well.

It's good to have those kind of movies for the children, it's exciting and also facinating for the adults as well.

The movie Speed Racer was really really good, but it was not what I expected. Not in a bad way, just not what I thought it was going to be. It's still really good, don't get me wrong, but different than the animated series. I recomed it to any die hard Speed Racer fans (like myself).

Lots of CGI eye candy, racing action, humor, etc. etc. etc, but... Underneath, there are really strong character values - repect, self-examination, loyalty to one's values, strong family, incorruptibility, courage, determination to succeed at the right thing. Don't let them tell you it's too long and too loud. In these troubled times, I encourage everyone to enjoy this movie to the end and see if you don't find a little Speed Racer inside of you.

Yeah it's Speed Racer. THe cartoon was dorky, I can remember watching it in the 70's. There was one good reenvisioning a while back but I can't find it.
THis movie is fun, with brilliant lighting especially on blu ray. The acting is ok, Spritle and Chim are fun for the kids for the adults eh meh.
The racing scenes are what you're getting the movie for which is a pleasure.
All in all a good visit down memory lane with a few twists and turns. Tim Curry is always a pleasure to watch as a villain.

People who care about animals should not rent or purchase Speed Racer. On the set of Speed Racer, a representative from the American Humane Association (AHA) witnessed an animal trainer &quot in an uncontrolled impulse, hit [a] chimpanzee.&quot If a trainer is bold enough to strike an animal in front of an AHA monitor, you can only imagine what is taking place behind the scenes when no one is watching. Great apes are beaten into submission in order to train them for use in film, television, and advertising. As babies they are forcibly separated from their mothers and trained by being beaten, kicked, and even electrocuted. By age 8, they are too strong and unruly to be safely handled, so they are often warehoused or callously discarded at substandard roadside zoos. Many languish in small cages for decades. By purchasing the Speed Racer DVD, you're supporting the abuse inflicted on great apes who are forced into the entertainment industry.
