Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Many long-running dramatic series limp through their last season and end with a whimper instead of a bang -- but not Deep Space Nine. To many fans, the 1998-99 episodes are the best in the entire run, marked by top-notch writing and the determination of producers to tie up most loose ends but leave viewers speculating about the fates of some favorite characters. Still riding the crest of the creative wave that made the preceding season so successful, Season 7 begins with a starkly dramatic episode that finds space-station commander Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks) trying to solve the mystery of his mother's death and ascertain its impact on his destiny. The Dominion War, begun and partly waged in Season 6, continues to exact a devastating toll on all involved -- particularly Worf (Michael Dorn), who is still grappling with the death of his mate and is oddly affected by the arrival of another Dax, the beautiful Ezri (played by Nicole deBoer). Colonel Kira Nerys (Nana Visitor) finally gets together with security chief Odo (Rene Auberjonois) in this season, and Sisko's evil doppelganger, Gul Dukat (Marc Alaimo), figures prominently in important developments. The mysterious wormhole, and its meaning in the overall scheme of things, is the subject of the memorable two-part series finale, "What You Leave Behind." What continues to make Deep Space Nine appealing, even in these final episodes, is its concentration on character interplay. It would have been easier to focus on the Dominion War and film a plethora of special-effects-laden battle sequences, but the show's producers resisted the obvious temptation to employ simplistic space-opera conventions. As a result, viewers understand and even feel a kinship with the well-delineated, highly individualistic inhabitants of this futuristic little city among the stars.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine: The Complete Seventh Season is one of the best DVD's ever made. The Seventh Season of Deep Space Nine is excellent but it is even better on DVD. Some of the best Deep Space Nine episodes are on this DVD including ''What You Leave Behind'' Parts I and II, ''Take Me Out to the Holosuite'', ''Chrysalis'', ''The Battle of AR-558'', ''Image in the Sand'', ''Inter Arma Silent Leges'', etcetera. Every episode in this season is excellent. In my opinion this is a must have for any Star Trek fan's collection.
