Younger in tone than previous Stargate series, this sci-fi drama follows a group of scientists, soldiers, and ordinary people who are forced to travel through a Stargate when they come under attack. Emerging on an archaic starship headed away from Earth, the group soon find that their destiny has been sealed, as the ship's course is locked. Stargate Universe is one of the best sci-fi shows ever. The acting and the writing are excelllent. Its a shame the show was not picked up for a third season.
I should start off by saying that I'm actually not a huge fan of SG-1, or SGA. So I understand why die hard Stargate fans don't enjoy this show. Stargate Universe is a very different animal. It's extremely character driven, with a slow and realistic grittiness that's lacking in it's more light-hearted counterparts. But that's exactly WHY I love it. The editing, musical choices, and beautiful cinematography I think make this show really remarkable visually. The acting is also good - and I found myself really floored by how they made each episode take a different sort of angle directorialy. By the time I reached episode #8 "Time", I knew I was watching a show that was in a class of it's own.
Let us all stop for a moment to let out a massive sigh of relief....all of us Stargate faithful.... all of us science fiction devoted.... all of us action loving, story and character development appreciating. A sigh of relief that YES, once in the rarest of circumstances we are lucky enough, in our short lives, to actually be present to witness consumer common-sense triumph over corporate Hollywood greed.. and to see this disgusting aberration finally put down. Yes, this wasn't "your grandfathers Stargate". BUT, as it turned out it was not my teenagers Stargate either. This was an act of fiscal desperation, attempting to correct a massive miscalculation of consumer interest, wrapped in today's "reality" show smut, justified as being artistically "more edgy". Let us also hope that when this was done, it was done with such effectiveness and finality, that the rest of us left scarred by two years of this atrocity, can now try to move on to more creatively worthy science fiction, and who knows..even maybe a worthy THIRD installment to this beloved franchise. For all who defended this show, all I can compassionately recommend to console your heartbreak is suggest maybe to start watching "Pretty Little Liars" and hope they relocate them through a stargate.
