Overview

Stunt Man

Director Richard Rush's cult classic The Stunt Man comes to DVD in a two-disc "limited edition" from the underdog DVD distributor Anchor Bay. This is a great-looking 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, including evenly rendered colors and deep black levels. Only a small amount of grain and color bleeding hinders the image, while the original aspect ratio perfectly captures the director's vision. The audio is presented in both DTS EX 6.1 as well as Dolby Digital 5.1 EX. Both of these soundtracks sound excellent with the surround feature utilized in many scenes. While there are moments where the soundtrack feels a bit muddled, overall, this is a very welcome new sound mix. Also included on the disc is a Dolby Digital 2.0 soundtrack. The Stunt Man: Limited Edition features a good many extra features that should excite fans of the film. To start with, there is a commentary track by director Richard Rush and actors Peter O'Toole, Steve Railsback, Barbara Hershey, Alex Rocco, Sharon Farrell, and Chuck Bail. This is a very entertaining commentary that includes a lot of insightful stories about the production of the film. Also included on this disc are some theatrical trailers for the movie, a few deleted scenes that are fairly interesting, some promotional materials (production and advertising) in a gallery, a photo gallery, and the complete screenplay on DVD-ROM (which must be accessed through a computer). Disc two of this set includes the two-hour documentary "The Sinister Saga of Making the Stunt Man." This feature -- written, directed, and narrated by Richard Rush -- includes interviews with Steve Railsback, Barbara Hershey, and Peter O'Toole, and is a very in-depth look at what it took to get this now-classic movie made and distributed. Anchor Bay has outdone themselves with this wonderful set that should entertain viewers for hours.
