The Beach

Danny Boyle's beautifully photographed adventure film The Beach arrives on DVD with a sharp 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer that does the film's photography justice. An English soundtrack is available in Dolby Digital 5.1, while English and French soundtracks can be heard in Dolby Digital Surround. Subtitles are available in English and Spanish. Extra features include a commentary track by the director, nine deleted scenes, a storyboard gallery, theatrical trailers, and a handful of television promotional spots. Music lovers may enjoy the video for "Pure Shores" by All Saints. For his first major project after the overwhelming success of Titanic, Leonardo Di Caprio took a risky path in this adaptation of Alex Garland's acclaimed novel, directed by Danny Boyle. Richard (Di Caprio) is an American backpacking through Asia with a handful of friends from Europe. While in Bangkok, he meets a mad Scotsman who calls himself Daffy Duck (Robert Carlyle). Shortly before Mr. Duck kills himself, he gives Richard a crude map to a place in Thailand that he claims is paradise on earth: beautiful, unspoiled, and uninhabited. For lack of anything better to do, Richard and his companions try to locate the spot, which, after a dangerous and taxing journey, takes them to a beach as beautiful as Duck said it would be. Richard and his friends settle in, but before long they discover that they are not alone; a large group of fellow travelers has already dug themselves in, and they have established a community with the same social evils that Richard was hoping to leave behind. Just as important, there is an army of natives who grow marijuana in the nearby hills and do not appreciate the presence of these visitors. The Beach proved controversial during production, partly due to production delays and shifting release dates, partly due to environmental concerns after crew members bulldozed parts of the Thai island of Phi Phi Le for the planting of non-native trees.

Danny Boyle's The Beach was without a doubt a wonderful piece of work, acquiring the American man's dream of finding closure, and more yet a sense of sanctuary. Leonardo Dicaprio was undoubtedly at his best, giving the audience a strong and believing performance. The Beach captured the heart of ultimately everyone in the world, portraying a sense of restlessness and human emotion. Mr. Dicaprio won the hearts of the audience, through his appeal, his character, and most of all, through choosing such a provocative film. Danny Boyle's The Beach deserves 5 stars, wholeheartedly!

Sure this movie may not be for everybody... but personally I found it very interesting and entertaining. A movie that gives us a lesson about paradise and how it can be spoiled. Leo does a great job as does the rest of the cast. Scenery is stunning!

Paradise is not actually a psysical place, is just a state of mind. If you are lucky enough to find it, it will stay forever

you click through channels and catch a movie that interests you but you always catch the ending but not the beginning? this is a movie you should see at the beginning then you have an idea what's going on. this is about a 3 people and a mysterious map and a truly breathtakingly beautiful beach. this film was weird and some of the scenes looked ridiculously creepy. was surprised when i saw danny boyle's name and i thought oh the guy who did 28 days later. to me this has to be leonardo's weirdest performance's ever and after the credits roll i was like poor leo. interesting story though.

The beach is one of the most accurate portrayals of the struggle to find paradise and keep it alive. For the group of humans that found the island paradise, life was simple. When certain events threaten their world however, their deepest animal insticts come out and they will do anything to protect their world. The images and actions of the characters are psychologically appealing and thought provoking.

This is the worst movie I have ever seen. After every bad movie I have seen after it, my family and I say 'well that wasn't as bad as the beach.' It was disturbing.
