The Final Cut

First-time filmmaker Omar Naim wrote and directed the sci-fi drama The Final Cut. Set in the near future, the story concerns a device implanted in the body that is capable of recording a person's entire life. Once it is extracted from the body after death, the footage can be played back on a screen in the form of "rememories." Robin Williams plays Alan Hakman, an editor who cuts together the footage to make pleasant movies for funerals. Tormented by his job and his own memories, Alan also has a troubled romantic relationship with bookseller Delila (Mira Sorvino). While looking through footage for his next project, Alan discovers a man whom he believes is from his own past. Meanwhile, former editor Fletcher (James Caviezel) wants the footage for his own purposes. The Final Cut was shown at the Berlin Film Festival in 2004.

We were absolutely floored! The Final Cut is a tremendously well-crafted portrayal of the budding impact of a new technology as it gains wide acceptance. The story line is dealing with death and our responses to our memories of the departed. Robin Williams does an excellent job playing a technology worker in an aspect of funeral services we've never before had the technology to consider. It reminds me of the protrayal of the technology in Brainstorm, only a little further along in commercialization and beginning to be integrated into our cultural norms and expectations.

This is one of those rare and intelligent sci fi flicks on par with Gattaca. If you're a Robin Williams fan and can stomach his somber acting like Insomnia and One Hour Photo then you should also enjoy this movie. Definitely worth one viewing.

One of the few movies that I turned off about 1/2 hour into it... a real downer with no redeeming qualities...
