This moving DVD, "The Gospel According to John" is both interesting and educational. It is extremely well done visually and from a research perspective. The documentary is especially ideal for those who are visual learners and individuals with poor eyesight, unable to read the bible. Yet, it is also entertaining in the most reverent sense of the word. I would enjoy seeing the entire Holy Bible formated in this manner. This History Channel special makes an excellent gift for men, women, children of all ages, families, classrooms (where permitted) and Sunday school. I need the inspirational lift it provides from time-to-time, when down and out. I love playing this and similar films around each religious holiday (i.e. Christmastime, Easter, Lent, Passover, Hanukkah, Advent). It is presented in a "non-preaching" manner - a bonus. It is about compassion, not judgement, as life should be. Perfect for everyone's film library. It is in my "spiritual" section, among other History station and A&E channel presentations on DVD - many found at B&N.

This film , while faithful to the Scriptural texts, presents Jesus as a friendly human being; I would emphasis the description "friendly", since other films have made Him too "holy", not very approachable. I found it excellent, a way to come into contact with the real Person.

We have found this video to be true to the Gospel of John. The actors are excellent, the scenery/sets are fantastic. Highly recommend.

If no other movie is a five star movie, this one alone is. It is the best Biblical production I've ever seen. It is by far the best movie covering the life of Jesus Christ. Many other popular titles make Jesus look drab, miserable, bitter, pathetic, and completely hopeless. Notable exceptions include 'Passion of the Christ' (2004), 'Jesus' (2000), and the vignettes from Michael W. Smith's music video for the song 'Secret Ambition' (1990). Oh, did I mention this movie is superior to all the others I've seen (i.e. better overall than 'The Passion of the Christ,' although the latter has some outstanding cinemagraphic features--slow motion sequences, rich textures, etc.). Other reviewers have 'similar wonderful reviews' for a 'similar title' distributed by VISUAL BIBLE INTL....maybe they should be copied & pasted to this section, some think.... My primary focus for the remainder of this review will be on removing obstacles for other shoppers who have seen the Visual Bible project's 'Gospel of John,' and are wondering what this 'Gospel of John' is like before they plunk down their hard-earned cash. Quick Answer: Yes, go ahead and buy it. Extended Answer: It was $50, now it's half-priced. I imagine the menus & end credits are revised, but if it holds to the word-for-word mission of the Visual Bible project, then it is the same feature presentation. The Visual Bible Intl. Version of this movie was on shelves in 2004, but was pulled off, and sent to 'The Movie Graveyard;' and even the sales associates who shared this information were puzzled, 'that normally only happens to Disney Movies¿(???)...' The folks at the local Barnes & Noble could still order it for me when Wal-Mart & Blockbuster could not (after I traded BB a bagful of my own DVD's to order it!), but with my 'buyers confusion,' and with new-found budgeting concerns, I waited and researched... With effort (& with the internet) the story unfolded; the project needed $¤ME kind of A$$I$TAN¢E, and Disney (owner of Buena Vista), de¢ided to £end a hand, perhaps to regain many of the departed values-based customers. They reportedly intend to resume the Visual Bible project of bringing the entire Bible to film. Already begun with the Gospel of Matthew, the Gospel of John, and Acts of the Apostles, the Visual Bible project now has a good prospect for completion, and at the high standards intended. Not only that, the 'Gospel of John' matches the cover to 'The Passion' (increasing and preserving the 'set' or 'collection' value of both movies), they're now more economically priced, and more widely available, due to Disney's huge market presence. That means the Good News (or 'Gospel') John intended to share with all people will be available to most everyone!

I got to see this movie when it was out in the theaters, and I loved it! This movie is completely accurate & word-for-word from the Scriptures! The acting is great, the costumes are beautiful, and the music is completely timeless! Henry Ian Cusick was excellent at his role as Jesus! He portrayed a very warm, loving, caring, compassionate, smiling, sweet, and kind Jesus that was both "human" and "divine." You just wanted to jump into the screen and HUG HIM!!! Other actors I thought were completely superb were Daniel Kash (Simon Peter), Lynsey Baxter (Mary Magdalene), Alan Van Sprang (Judas Iscariot), and Stephen Russel (Pontius Pilate). I also thought the actor who played the "Leading Pharisee" did a good job! Henry Ian Cusick's performance as Jesus will warm your heart, and the crucifixion scenes will send you to tears! This movie is sure to become a classic! I highly recommend it for any Christian who loves Jesus!

This is historically thought provoking to say the least. What a way to get to know Jesus if you don't already. Delicious.

I encountered this version in a bible study of the Gospel of John. It was a suprisingly faithful adaptation of the gospel. The acting is very good with some of Britains very good if not well known actors. There is the three hour version which can get a bit long but sticks closely to the scripture and the two hour version (both included in the DVD) which presents the most well known sections of the scripture. It does not incite controversy in its presentation but does aid in understanding and in discussng the gospel. This is not a grand mega hollywood spectacular, but a rather good, honest telling of the story.

We had rented this movie a couple years back at a BlockBuster & We knew we had to have this movie. My husband watches it over & over.
I loan this movie out to anyone with any questions regarding "God" "Jesus". This movie is straight out of the new testament. This is the most beautiful, comprehensive, knowledgable movie I have ever seen. I have to order 2 more because every time I loan ours out my husband hopes it will be returned? You never know, that's how great it is. This is a must have for your movie collection.
