Overview

Jimmy Durante plays the patriarch of a down-on-their-luck family of acrobats, who suddenly finds a great deal of money hidden in his house amid the depths of the Great Depression. The authorities suspect Durante of being a thief, but in fact the culprit is a benevolent little squirrel named Rupert. This clever critter has been pilfering money from the obnoxious, wealthy miser who lives in the adjoining house and who decided to stash most of his funds in the wall separating the two residences. The stop-motion animation is the handiwork of George Pal.

A Christmas Wish is a heartwarming holiday classic about a New York family (led by Durante) who are down on their luck at Christmas time. Shortly before Christmas, they move into a ground floor apartment where Rupert the squirrel lives in the attic rafters. Just when it seems that the holiday will come and go without so much as a Christmas tree, Rupert acts as the family¿s guardian angel ¿ not only saving Christmas, but changing their lives forever. The film is enlivened with the warmth and sweetness of an unforgettable love story between Terry Moore (of Mighty Joe Young) and Tom Drake (of Meet Me in St. Louis). Rupert the Squirrel (created using George Pal¿s Academy Award winning animation technique) will charm young and old alike. Jimmy Durante shines when he sings Jingle Bells and other well-loved Christmas carols in the evocative voice that made him one of America¿s recording legends.

Don't let the bargain basement price fool you. 'A Christmas Wish', starring Jimmy Durante and Terry Moore, is an undiscovered holiday gem. Released in 1950, you'll be wondering where this hilarious Christmas comedy has been hiding all these years. A former theatrical couple and their teenage daughter, Rosalinda, finds itself strapped at Christmastime. They move to a tiny, rundown apartment, owned by a miserly landlord, who every week socks $1500 in hundred dollar bills behind a loose board leading to the attic. In the attic lives Rupert, a trained squirrel, whose owner had been evicted. With Christmas coming, and no money for even a tree, Durante's wife sits in a chair praying for help, because 'Rosalinda needs shoes'. To her amazement, hundred dollar bills start raining down through a hole in the skylight. Add a warm love story, and the great 'Schnozzola' at his delightful best, singing Christmas songs at the piano, and you have a 'new' Christmas classic just waiting to be discovered.

I bought this movie on the recommendation of others on this site. Waste of money. The DVD quality is so poor, we could not tell what was going on in this film. It's very dark B/W and the sound is extremely poor quality. It may be a worthwhile movie, but until it's digitally remastered, you'll never know by watching this DVD.
