I fell in love with this movie when I first saw it 10 years ago. I now have the book (by Peter S. Beagle) and the CD (it says The Last Unicorn in German but the CD is in English) along with the VHS and other random Last Unicorn items. I was so excited to see this come out on DVD and i STRONGLY suggest that everyone who likes unicorns, fantasy or just plain beauty should watch this incredible movie. Believe me, it's not just any cartoon.
I saw this movie for the first time when it came out on television, in 1985. I was 4 years old. My dad taped it for me. He knew I loved Flight of Dragons and since that was my favorite movie, thought I would like this one too. I watched it on a dark rainy day in early spring. Bad idea! I cannot tell you how many nightmares I had from this movie and was unable to sleep well from how long. If your child is highly imaginative and/or sensitive, please don't let them see this until they are in their teens, b/c there are many, many disturbing and perverse elements in it. Not only that but the language and themes are somewhat difficult for a child to understand. So why my rating? For its audience, which should be teens to adults, it is a profound work of art that american animators just don't make anymore. It is true japanese anime, before it was known as such. Remember, just because something is animated doesn't mean its for kids!
I thought this movie was great! It is truely magical and tells the story of the last unicorn beautifully. It has great songs and graphics, the cels are really beautiful.
This movie is well written, and beautifully drawn, I have tried to find this movie for years without luck. I am soo happy to see that it is being released on DVD, I look forward to sharing it with my children.
I saw this movie originally in 1984 when I was 8. I watched it continuously until 1986--when it seemed to disappear from the planet. Just the other day, I saw it on cable and threw a tape in the VCR. Knowing VCR tapes have the lifespan of milk, I searched desperately for it on DVD and also the book to read to my newborn daughter. And here they are. Goddess bless Barnes & Noble!
I have loved this movie ever since I was a little child. I used to sit with my best friend and make her watch it every weekend with me. The story is wonderful and enchanting, while the unicorn is beautiful and magical. I know this is not a typical childrens movie, but it is a movie that I will always love and treasure forever. I'm sure I will sit my children down more than once to watch it. I recommend this movie to everyone!
OMG. If you have not been blessed with the opportunity of seeing this movie, run right out and get it. Now. I loved it as a teenager and hadn't seen it in years until just recently when my 'friend' brought it over. He just loves it. It was such an eye opener to realize that you didn't have to be high to enjoy this film like I originally thought. You really don't need alcohol and drugs to have a good time. This movie finally proved that to me. It also has helped me with my foundation's plight to end unicorn hunting for meat, their precious horns, and sometimes even for the hide. Check us out. We are Unicorns Forever.
I remember the first time that I saw the moive The Last Unicorn. All of my life I've had a speical connection to unicorns. Weither or not this moive was the cause of it, I don't know for sure; but I do know that this movie definetly fueled it. The feelings that I get from watching the movie, or just from hearing the theme song alone; bring up so many feelings and memories that tap back into my childhood innocents and wonders about the world. A place where unicorns, fairies, and anything else fantasy where real and lived amongst us in our everday lives. I think that this movie is a must for not only unicorn lovers, but also for lovers of fantasy, and of course older children. I think that this movie can also help expand the immagination and creativeity of children. I guess the point that I'm really trying to make, is that you'll love it and so will your kids.
my absolute fav. movie.couldn't take my eyes off it even if i tried!!!! no other movie could take its place. Perfect for the lover of the enchanted world of unicorns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Last Unicorn is one of my all time favorate movies. I still to this day have my original recording off of Showtime. I am so happy that it will be put out on DVD in March. Just the other day I was in Hot Topic and they had a Last Unicorn T-shirt, which made me so estatic bc I love the movie. Ever since I was a little kid unicorns have been one of my favorate mystical creatures. And with this movie being so great it's ashame that so many people do not know of it. One of my teachers in the school I am attending is one of the only people I know outside of my family that knows about the movie. Like I said before I am glad that this movie is going to be released on DVD bc that means I will be able to share this movie with my children in the future and I know they will enjoy it. I also have a 2 yr old god cousin who's sister loves me dearly and I want to be able to share this movie with her as well bc we are so much alike in many ways so I know she will enjoy it. I know that with it being released on DVD more people will enjoy this movie as much as all the people who've seen it in the past years.
I was so happy to see this title rereleased into DVD format. I first saw the movie in the theatre way way back in '83 and immediatly fell in love with it. My husband used to get annoyed to see it in the vhs player 'again' and I've almost worn out my poor old orginal vhs copy. Children will adore this film and the hopeless romantic will end up using at least 4 tissues throughout. I recommend the reading of the book as well. Peter Beagle can be hilarious. Like the Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia, the 'Last Unicon' just doesn't get old, it simply gets more marvelous.
I loved this movie as a kid! I first saw it when I was 6. I'm now 26, and I still remember how all my mom had to do to get my cousins and I quiet would be to put this in the VCR. This video was definitely the cause of my love for such movies as the Hobbit, LOTR, and any number of fantasy movies later on. Seeing this here reminds me of the days of my childhood. It's got everything you could ask for: fights, magic, danger, comedy, beauty. I watched it so many times the video finally gave out. I never thought I'd ever see this in a store again, especially on DVD!
i wish i had read the barnes and noble review before buyin this movie. it is a good movie for adults, but i don't need my kids repeating 'damn you' from the movie. they say damn twice and what 'what the hell' once and those are just the ones i caught. someone is also called an idiot. this movie doesn't belong in the kids section. i took it back to the store and exchanged it for one i knew didn't have bad language in it. it's not a G-rated movie!!
I remember watching this movie when i was about three or four. It was my favorite movie and probally still is. The movie has so much adventure and fantacy in it, its hard to resist. For all you people who have not seen it, go rent it today. You wont regret it.
i love this movie it was given to me a a little girl and i have had it seens then , and i would get it if i was you . you will love it to
a truely wonderful movie
Such a beautiful, exciting and unique animated movie that takes you to another world and the script is just original. A childhood favorite movie of mine, this is a movie for everyone, too bad the DVD is bareboned but that's OK, maybe next year when the remake hits theaters there might be a 2-Disc edition with widescreen to cash in on the remake. P.S: Amalthea in the movie, who is the unicorn's half-naked chick self is incredibly hot and is guaranteed to make men and boys watch this movie!
I absolutely love this movie. If you like fantasy, you'll definitely love it. However, if you've seen and didn't like most of the titles(i.e. Labyrinth, Legend, etc.) I've listed below, you may want to skip this one. You might want to be careful if you plan on showing it to small children, as they do swear a few times, and some of the characters might be frightening to a young audience.
This was my all time favorite movie as a child and it still holds a special place in my heart. It is a great movie for any little girl who has alot of imagination.
This movie offers everything to everyone, it's got action, adventure, humor and tears. Not to mention, the Unicorn transforms into a hot cartoon chick guaranteed to make the guys smile. I recommend this movie.
This is a brilliant adaptation of Beagle's book -- I loved it when I saw it as a kid, and can't wait to share it with mine, when they get a little older. The themes and overall tone of the book are beautifully preserved, which means it's awfully creepy and stressful in places. I can't wait to see it again, now that it's available on DVD!
This movie has been my favorite story since the moment I first watched it! I love that it is being re-realesed for a whole new generation to love. I can't wait to share it with my own children!!
