The Office - The Complete First Series

A mockumentary-style workplace comedy series that has proven a hit on both sides of the pond, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's first season of The Office finds its way to stateside shores courtesy of BBC Video. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image is crisp and clear with spot-on skin tones and little evidence of digital artifacting. Likewise, the sound, presented in closed-captioned English Dolby Digital Stereo, is a perfect re-creation of the original television audio. The inclusion of optional English subtitles will no doubt be a thankful addition for Americans unable to keep up with the British accents and oft-used slang as well. Speaking of the slang, BBC Video has also found fit to include some great extras on this disc. First off is a hilarious recreation of the Wernham Hogg company newsletter, complete with character files and an insightful dictionary of British slang. The second disc of this two disc set includes a behind-the-scenes featurette and some interesting deleted scenes. Featuring interviews with both Gervais, Merchant, and numerous other cast members, the featurette is both revealing and hilarious as it follows much in the same vein as the series. Likewise, the deleted scenes included here -- while cut for obvious reasons in most cases -- are still quietly amusing even if they didn't work in the episodes.

If you have already seen David Brent (office manager) and his staff on BBC America then you will need no introduction. If not then it would not be an undersatement to say that David Brent is a one man Monty Python. He in his own words is a 'chilled out entertainer' trying to be cool constantly and usually failing... he's been in a band, he wants to live fast and die old and he thinks he is a comic genius. Only Gareth Keenan (the creepy office know it all) looks up to him but in the classic Training Day episode he has a captive audience as he takes over, gets his guitar out and puts on an impromptu gig for his staff... 'Free love on the freelove highway' being the highlight. If you've ever worked in an office you will see just how accurate this portrayal is completely with bad jokes, awkward silences, and office pranks. This is genius!

The Office (UK) is a phenomenal story. Such brilliant, original ideas that definitely started a new fantastic way to make a comedy show. Buy it!

Sorry Steve Carrell, but the original just cannot be duplicated. It is the perfect mixture of painful comedy, a love story and ultimately redemption. All of the characters are amazing with a special nod to Garreth.

This is one of the most entertaining shows on TV. It stays with you after viewing. The cast itself is amazing, but Ricky Gervais (as David Brent) is remarkably brilliant. The writing can't get any better. I recommend this especially to anyone who fancies British humor. Deadpan and Dry. Love it!

It took me a while to get used to the unusual format, but I highly enjoyed these first episodes. In fact, it's the best comedy series I've seen in years. Low-key, subtle, and very British, it soon grows on you, with all of the characters endearing, even the boss! Because it's set in an office, most people will identify with the characters and the situations. It's horrible to think it's being remade. What's the point? MediaMale

A comic masterpiece, one that you can watch over and over again. It has the despicable boss, his butt-smooching lacky and all the rest of the office who make fun of them, but have little joy other than that during their day-to-day tedium. It's all great fun in Slough.

My BIL just returned from a 2-year stint in England and he brought this DVD with him. I sat down to watch this and didn't get up until I had watched the whole thing. I was laughing so hard that I was sore the next day. I'm a big fan of the Office Space movie, but this takes the office experience to a whole new level. Basically, this is a show of office workers doing boring, tedious work. The boss, David, thinks everyone is SO happy, because he's such a hoopy guy. In fact, the entire office is obviously miserable BECAUSE the boss is so out of touch. A great show. A must see.
