The Rockford Files Movie Collection, Vol. 1

There's never been another TV detective quite like Jim Rockford (James Garner), whether he's cruising in his classic Pontiac Firebird, cracking cases from his Malibu mobile home, or running with -- or from -- the law. And now, the wry private investigator with the ex-con past is back for more action and clever comebacks in four entertaining movies. From investigating the children of a wealthy socialite to proving his godson innocent of murder, Rockford stays cool while chasing after hot criminals on the lam on the sun-drenched streets of Los Angeles. Featuring Stuart Margolin reprising his role as Rockford's troublesome con-man pal Angel, the movies also include such guest stars Dyan Cannon, Joanna Cassidy, Maxwell Caufield, and Morton Downey, Jr. This two-disc set offers the first four of the eight Rockford movies produced in the mid-1990s, nearly a decade and a half removed from The Rockford Files' NBC run. The titles are "I Still Love L.A."; A Blessing in Disguise"; If the Frame Fits..."; and "The Godfather Knows Best."

The continuing adventures of Jim Rockford. I watched the series when first run and remember the shortened sixth season. Didn't know about the behind-the-scenes battle until much later. Most series reach or pass the "jumping the shark" period but Rockford went out on top and I don't believe Carell or Garner would have let it get that far anyway. By the time the movies aired it was 15 years later and Jim was older too. Wisely, he was portrayed that way and suffered a bad knee to boot. Garner also had back and knee issues, which was the reason for the shortened final season and the eventual cancelation, so the action was toned down but the snappy dialog and fiestiness of the characters remained. Missing from the movies was Noah Berry Jr. He passed away just before the first movie was released and it was dedicated to him. Why he didn't participate is a minor mystery but having died from a cerebral thrombosis one can only guess he may have been too ill to work. So now we're getting to the final of a great series. For me the anticipation hasn't exceeded my expectations. Solid scripts and acting. I'm sure fans were hoping for the all eight movies in one package, I was expecting them as a bonus on the last season set as there were no extra features and plenty of room, but it looks like this is the way of releasing for some series. Oh well, splitting hairs when I should be grateful. Hopefully, with the final four, there will be some extras with James Garner's participation or at least a retrospect of some sort as most of the people involved are still around. Just want to thank James Garner, Steve Carell and all involved for giving us a great series and for bringing it back to us to enjoy again. P.S. Check out "Marlow" with Garner. It is credited as the inspiration for the Rockford character and airs on TCM sometimes. Maybe MGM will see fit to realease it in the near future.
