Overview

Heartwarming adventure is underway in the family film The Trail of Old Drum. The film is presented in a decent looking 1.33:1 full frame transfer. This is a very apt image that sports solid colors and dark black levels and only the slightest amount of dirt and grain. While it would have been nice to have had this film in a widescreen transfer, overall children and adults alike should be pleased with how good this full screen picture looks. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo and works well within the confines of the film. Though the directional effects and surround sounds are kept to a minimum, the bulk of the track is free and clear of any hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles. Lion's Gate has included a few well produced extra features, starting with a commentary track by director Sean McNamara, producer David Brookwell and director of photography Mark Doering-Powell. This is a very sweet, informative commentary track that should give viewers more insight into the film's production and story. A short "Making Of" featurette sports interviews with various cast and crew members and, while fluffy, is better than the usual promotional tacked onto most DVDs. Finally there is a reel of full frame deleted scenes and outtakes from the film which allow the viewer to see what ended up on the cutting room floor.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Updated from a true story that happened in 1870 in Missouri, this Animal Planet original production is a bright, heartwarming family film suitable for all ages and temperaments. It moves a might slow here and there, but the gorgeous scenery and sturdily constructed scenes. It's a lot better than the Lassie feature film from 1994. It's standard boy-and-his dog stuff straight from the 1950s, but that hasn't been seen much, and young children will find it fresh. And the dog is a great actor.

This is such a good movie. I love the way you think it is going one way but then it changes direction. It was so good I had to cry.
