Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
The X-Files, a series-cum-cultural phenomenon that redefined sci-fi TV for the 1990s, comes to its intriguing end in this 20-episode Season 9 collection. Gillian Anderson returns as FBI Agent Dana Scully for the final run, but the exit of series co-star David Duchovny as Agent Fox Mulder at the end of Season 8 altered the show’s formidable chemistry. Rather than attempting to recreate the Mulder-Scully dynamic with Season 8 addition Robert Patrick (Agent John Doggett), though, the producers wisely opted to add a third agent, Annabeth Gish as Monica Reyes. The ninth-season opener, "Nothing Important Happened Today, Part 1" continues to explore the mysteries surrounding Scully's baby, William, and introduces a new foe, the Super Soldiers. The episode "4-D" is by far the best of the season, as Doggett is shot and Reyes must hunt for answers in this time-bending outing. A tasty two-parter, "Provenance" and "Providence" again finds Scully's son in danger, and she seeks out Doggett and Reyes’s help in protecting him. "Jump the Shark" finds the cast of the short-lived spin-off The Lone Gunmen returning to The X-Files for a heartbreaking reunion. Amazingly, in "The Truth," series creator Chris Carter manages to tie up nine seasons of twists and turns in a tidy, two-part series finale. As Carter often said, no one really dies on The X-Files, and in the finale a number of past characters return to guide Mulder (a guest-starring Duchovny) in his search for the Truth. Speaking of guest stars, this season saw Burt Reynolds, William Devane, Lucy Lawless, Cary Elwes, and Michael McKean -- reprising his role from Season 6 as Morris Fletcher -- turning up for stints. Fans are sure to delight in the two discs of bonus features on the Collector's Edition set, especially the interviews with the cast and crew about the ending of the series and the deleted scenes with commentary, such as a scene from "The Truth" with a George W. Bush impersonator. A video montage at the end of the documentary "The Truth About Season 9" flashes through characters and scenes from nine seasons, and really hammers home how much The X-Files will be missed.

I don't know how to describe the heartache and overall disappointment of Season 9 of this once-great television show. It is as if the writers, producers, and, yes, even the superb actors just gave up. Character relationships fell completely apart, once-riveting storylines shattered into puzzling and troubling fragments, and the series finale left so much unexplained, unexplored, and underdeveloped. The relationship between Scully and Mulder was a particular let-down. After years of well-paced sexual tension and development of their feelings for each other, the eventual coming together was anticlimactic and frustrating. What happened to the brilliance and nuance of this show? Where did my favorite characters in television history go? Oh, how I wished Joss Whedon had been involved...

Okay, so this show is easily one of the best shows of its era. The roots of popular science fiction can certainly be found in this show. while the end was not the greatest, the season still had many amazing moments. I personally enjoy the Reyes/Doggett dynamic. They are wonderful actors, and a great joy to watch. Personally, I also enjoy seeing Scully without Mulder. So much of who her character is depends on the Mulder/Scully phenom, and it was refreshing to see her stand on her own. Gillian Anderson is a powerhouse. I love her deeply (almost as much as I love David sans shirt... but that's a bit off topic). Overall, good season... great acting-and adequate answers on most fronts.

As an avid X-Files fan I was excited to get season 9, especially since I missed the original airing of it. While I came to like Agent Dogget, I can't truly say the same for Reyes. She comes across as forced and her character never seems to change or show any true emotion. With Mulder and Scully not playing a large part of the storyline, it doesn't seem near as interesting and the conspiracy theories aren't nearly as prominent as they were in the past seasons. I have enjoyed it for the most part though, and was sad to see a few of the episodes where beloved characters meet with misfortunate. I have two episodes left before the truth is revealed and I can't wait to see them.
