"Columbia Pictures had issued seven prior volumes of Three Stooges material, which moved chronologically through the comedy troupe's multi-decade career; this eighth volume from Columbia offers the last 32 Stooges shorts, produced between 1955 and 1959. This was the period that began with a tragic off-camera incident - Shemp Howard's fatal heart attack - prompting Moe and Larry to turn to a stand-in, Joe Besser; the period ended not with any marked personal tragedy among the men but with the closure of Columbia's short subjects division in 1958, which effectively pushed Moe and the boys into early retirement.
