It's all very well to say, ''it's only entertainment after all'' but when a lot of people get their only historical info from movies like this, it's an important issue. The Barnes and Noble review says the movie is ''patriotic but not jingoistic''. Excuse me, but if you take a historical event that involved the British, change it all around to make it look like Americans did it, then say 'based on actual events', how can it not be jingoistic? A lot of Brit WWII vets were really upset when this came out, and I think they had good reason

Director fully succeeds in his mission: tell a WWII story the old-fashioned way. Fully exemplifies the teamwork needed to succeed in any undertaking; shows how to make use of all available resources. Very interesting how the cast ''changes'' as the movie progresses due to the various deaths that occur. An honest appraisal of the type of character needed in a war-based situation and shows how this is developed. Sound design is awesome as is the cinematography

This movie was a rip off of Das Boot, it was so bad I had to watch it in fast forward. For a real submarine movie see Das Boot, at least it is historically correct.

This movie was awesome! Those who say that its not hitorically acurrate are wrong. Watch some of the Special Features on the DVD and you'll see what I mean. I have talked to many WWII vets, and they loved it. This was a great movie, well worth seeing.

This is one of my favorite movies. Well-acted and technically wonderful. But what I enjoy most is the growth that each of the characters undergoes during this tense mission. The challenges of moving beyond thinking you are a leader to actually becoming one in battle are starkly displayed in this drama. Working through enormous challenges and using your ingenuity to resolve seemingly unresolvable problems is well-drawn out in this film. The battle sequences also focus on the human element and the impact they have on the people involved. This is a wonderful film.

This movie was very disappointing. The acting was stiff, the story-line was completely unbelievable and totally predictable. And although I don't expect Hollywood to ever be historically accurate, it warped even Hollywood's distorted view of history. Ask a WWII submariner if he liked it or thought it reflected, even closely, his experiences. I have, he and it didn't.

this movie kicked butt(so to speak) the movie was great. this movie is defenetly for people that like ww2 movies, like me( i myself, like the more modern ones) the movie had kind od a ''saving private rya'' effect to it. but instead of a person, it was an object, the Enigma. neways, i'll let u find out more about it in the movie.

Yea, it pays tribute to WWII sub vets but that doesn't make it a great movie. Like most action flicks, U-571 relies on explosions and just in the nick of time suspense to keep the audience's attention. The plot, characters and dialogue lack depth. The sub is just there to give it a fresh setting and look. To see a sub movie, watch director's cut of Das Boot with english subtitles.

This movie was not based on one true story, but actually one several true incidences that happened between the British Navy and the US's. I bought this movie online. I didn't read the details, just ordered it. I thought I was getting the Russian Sub movie about the reactor crisis. Once I watched it I realized this was a very good mistake! The story keeps you involved, plenty of action, good effects and intrigue. They do use some German in the dialogue and some heavy accents, but it is pretty easy to follow along. I can't say this is the "feel-good movie of the year" but all things considered it still has a good ending (even if it isn't exactly happily-ever-after.) It's a great one to watch with your high school children and discuss WWII. History teachers may want to consider using it, however there is language and violence. Writing this review has made me decide that I want to watch it again. Hmmm, think I'll go pop some popcorn now!

This movies is great! A perfect atmosphere of tension and suspense is carried throughout the movie. A team based on a U.S. submarine is sent on a mission to caputure a German U-Boat in tact, so as to steal the Enigma Machine (German code generator); so as to be able to know German orders and positions. They complete the missions, and then things go wrong.... (great tension). Makes the popcorn taste even better. Now, most people give this a lower rating becasue it is not historically correct. And it is the true the British were the major players in capturing the Enigma machine; and credit is given at the end. But hey....this is entertainment. Not a documentary. People forget what the are rating. I do not see people lowering their rating on ''Kelly Hero's'', becasue it is not factual........It is entertainment, and good entertainment. So if you want a very enjoyable W.W. II Submarine film filled with suspense and tension watch ''Das Boot'' or ''U-571''. Both are good. (and preferred in that order)

Besides the pure talent of Matthew McConaughey, this movie has become a favorite. I saw this movie with a few friends and as we all loved it, I think this movie touched me the most. I had an unforgettable, long-lasting chill that went down my spine. It gave me a glimpse at what my grandfather had went through. He was a Navy man in WWII ... whom I hold him in the highest regards. I recommend anyone to see this movie. The effects and the storyline are simply breathtaking. You really get a feel for this one. I have been anticipating the release date of Oct. 28th for a long time. My grandfather and I are going to watch it - together...

Horrible film on how an American WWII submarine crew covertly captures the German Enigma encoding machine from an unsuspecting U-Boat. Claiming that it's based on actual events is a far stretch since it was the British who completed that legendary operation. In addition the movie further distorts history by showing a fully desegrated American crew with an African-American officer. That is completely false; complete desegregation in the U.S. military didn't take place until the Vietnam War over 20 years later. Finally, virtually all of the film's directing and edititing techniques were stolen and/or borrowed from the superior German film 'Das Boot' which was released almost 20 years earlier. Give our WWII veterans some respect and shun this revisionist PC propaganda! Make Hollywood produce films that show us history for what it was!

This movie was a big rip off of Das Boot. If you want to see a mig holywood spoof on what could've been a good movie, see this. The acting was terrible, it was historically inaccurate (trust me, i'm a WW2 buff), and it was totally predictable

Being a WW2 fan and interested in U-boats, this movie was very entertaining. It's got a good, strong cast and a good story. I think think that the effects are really cool. I'm glad that I saw the movie because I have read about depth charges before but I have never seen them. But, I think you will enjoy the movie.

I didn't know if i would like this movie; i thought there would be a lot of blood and not much historical accuracy. It is actually very historically accurate, and the actors are so impressive. The actors in the movie are not only good looking, but extremely talented. I particularly enjoyed Jon Bon Jovi, Jack Noseworthy, Erik Palladino, and of course Matthew McConaughey. I just want eveyone to go rent or buy this movie, cause it rocks. It gives you an idea of what the men actually went through during WWII.
