A young housemaid travels to Hong Kong for a job that will help support her family, and struggles with a difficult moral decision as the country prepares to make a delicate political transition. The year is 1996. In mere months, Hong Kong will be handed over to China. Meanwhile, Tess lands a cleaning job that will help her provide for her family back in the Philippines. Shortly after she arrives, however, her employer suffers a premature death. Now adrift in a strange land, the desperate girl faces nothing but abuse and disappointment while searching for employment. All the while, she is tortured by the knowledge that her family depends on her for their survival. Wandering the Wan Chai district by night with her roommate Nikki, Tess learns that a girl can make good money by becoming a masseuse who caters to lonely Western travelers. Now Tess has the weight of the world on her shoulders, and every day her options seem to shrink. What will become of her family if she sticks to her morals? And what will become of her if she chooses to sacrifice her values to save her loved ones?
