Overview

This modest sci-fi thriller gets a solid treatment on DVD from Anchor Bay Entertainment. Warning Sign is presented in an anamorphic, letterboxed transfer that captures the film's straightforward look and muted colors with plenty of clarity. The disc also retains the film's original stereo mix; it's not as action-packed as a modern stereo mix would be, but it offers a strong soundscape nonetheless. In terms of extras, there is a pair of trailers (a theatrical preview and a TV spot) plus a commentary track with co-writer/director Hal Barwood. The commentary suffers from some dull patches, but Barwood is clearly excited to be there and reveals a few interesting nuts-and-bolts details for the patient listener. The disc also begins with trailers for other Anchor Bay releases, but thankfully viewers are allowed the option of skipping them by pressing their "menu" button. All in all, this is a decent package for fans of Warning Sign and a quality effort all around from Anchor Bay (at a nice price, to boot).

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Often overlooked, this thoughtful, compelling thriller deserves better than the ho-hum reception it usually receives. Warning Sign sets itself apart from the pack by taking a careful plotting- and character-conscious approach to its storyline; instead of going for a roller-coaster ride packed with shocks, writers Hal Barwood and Matthew Robbins take the necessary time to establish their characters and their situation. When the time comes for a confrontation, the heroes use their intellect as much as they use brawn (a nice touch). Warning Sign also benefits from an unusually distinguished cast: Jeffrey DeMunn and Sam Waterston give their heroic characters a vulnerable, down-to-earth quality and Kathleen Quinlan makes a likeably resourceful damsel in distress. On the downside, Hal Barwood's direction is a bit pedestrian and lacks the flair for the thrills that could have made this film a classic. However, the film's strong story and subtle approach to its chosen genre make Warning Sign a decent choice for anyone interested in a thoughtful variation on the sci-fi thriller.
