Welcome to the Grindhouse: Hellcats/Chain Gang Women
BCI Eclipse's latest installment in their "Welcome To The Grindhouse" series of two-films-on-one-disc exploitation DVDs is a bit of a bait and switch item -- while the front cover promises a "Biker Double Feature," there are no motorcycles on display in Chain Gang Women (or very many women, for that matter), and The Hellcats is hardly one of the better films in the "thugs on choppers" genre. Chain Gang Women has been transferred to disc in the full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, while The Hellcats has been given a widescreen transfer, letterboxed at 1.78:1 on conventional televisions and enhanced for 16x9 playback on widescreen monitors. In both cases, the transfers are good enough to reveal the flaws of the low-budget camerawork and production design, though the colors are strong and accurate, the images clear and these movies probably haven't looked this good since their initial release in the Sixties and Seventies. The audio for both pictures has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo, retaining the original monophonic mixes, and no subtitles or multiple language options have been included. As a bonus, viewers can select "The Grindhouse Experience" playback option, which allows the two films to play as a continuous double-feature, with vintage coming attractions trailers and intermission bumpers included. This is one of the lesser titles in BCI's "Grindhouse" series given the selection of films, but the presentation is solid and fans of sleaze cinema will at least want to give this a rental.
