White Christmas, Paramount's belated follow-up to the 1942 hit Holiday Inn, was the studio's first VistaVision production. A veritable warehouse full of oldie-but-goodie Irving Berlin tunes are woven into the film's simplistic plotline, along with a handful of new songs, of which "What Can You Do With a General?" is the least memorable. Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye (replacing an ailing Donald O'Connor) play nightclub entertainers Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, while Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen are cast as singing-sister act Betty and Judy. The foursome travel to Vermont to visit Bob and Phil's WII commanding officer, General Waverly (Dean Jagger, who looks and sounds like Dwight D. Eisenhower!), who now runs a rustic old inn. Discovering that the general is in dire financial straits, the four entertainers secretly make plans to bail the old guy out with a big musical show, enlisting the aid of Bob and Phil's army buddies. Corny in the extreme, White Christmas evidently struck a responsive note with film fans; it was the high-grossing picture of 1954, and a decade later proved to be a ratings bonanza when it was given its network-TV premiere. Of the four stars, Crosby comes off best, especially when singing the title song at the beginning and end of the film; Kaye is a bit overshadowed this time out, though he's quite funny camping it up in a "drag" version of Irving Berlin's "Sisters." Still a big favorite on the home-video circuit, White Christmas may not be the best Bing Crosby musical on the market, but it's certainly one of the most heartwarming.

This has been a holiday staple in my family for years. It just isn't Christmas until we watch White Christmas. The music and dancing are what make this movie truly unique. Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye are a great comedy and music duo. I only wish they had done more movies together. I recommend this movie to anyone who wants an extra shot of Christmas spirit for the season.
I can't imagine what the world would have been like without these four wonderful and talented stars. They make this movie come alive and make you wish for a true White Christmas more than ever! It is a wonderful movie for people of all ages!
My parents introduced me to this movie as a child and I fell in love with it. This movie is one of the greatest. It is wonderful in every way.
A true classic. The whole family can enjoy this patriotic film of our past. I wish I could have lived in this time and gone to this Vermont Inn. A must see each holiday season.
I just have one question: Why can't there be any more 'Bing Crosbys' and 'Rosemary Clooneys' out there today? Everything about this movie--plot, music, costumes, etc--is superb.
Love this movie...purchased it as a gift for my daughter and her family so that she can continue the tradition of watching it during the Christmas Holiday season.
It is one of my favorite Christmas movies
Classic ~ good holiday movie, favorite movie stars, great music, good story, happy ending. A light-hearted movie for an enjoyable evening.
Great movie, watch it every year.
This has been my favorite Christmas movie in as many years as I can remember. The entire cast is just sensational. Not a Christmas goes by without me and my family watching it. A must for me!
This to me is the best holiday movie ever. I have watched this movie for so many years and still love every minute of it. A true American classic!
My husband and I watch it several times each Christmas season to get us into the spirit of the holiday. I love watching old movies and this year seemed especially special since Rosemary Clooney just recently passed away.
This is a holiday tradition for viewing at my house every Christmas. It is a wonderful and entertaining delight. The commentary added in the DVD from interviews with Rosemary Clooney were a great bonus.
Great Holiday movie for adults, as slower moving and will not hold attention of younger audience!
I have watched this movie every year since i was a little girl. It is truely a classic for all ages. The costumes, the music, the comedy, everything in the movie is unbelievable. If you want a great christmas movie to share with everyone, make this one a yearly tradition.
My husband and I watch this movie every year. It's become a great way for me to get into the spirit of the holiday. (Okay, okay...my husband humors me by watching with me). It's pretty hokey in places but if you like sentimental music and great dance numbers then this movie could be for you.
It isn't Christmas until I watch this movie. It is too bad movies like this are not made anymore. It might be cheesy, boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl in the end, but who cares. It is good entertainment.
One of the best musicals ever done as well as great performances
After years of hinting that I really wanted the DVD, I broke down and bought it for myself. I hadn't realized how poor the quality on the video tape was until I watched the DVD.
