An old and forgotten game develops magical powers in this fantasy for the whole family. Twelve-year-old Walter Budwing (Josh Hutcherson) and his younger brother, Danny (Jonah Bobo), figure they're going to be in for a boring time when their father (Tim Robbins), who was supposed to spend the day with them, is suddenly called away on business, and gives them strict orders not to leave the house. Walter, who doesn't have much use for Danny, is motivated by boredom more than anything else when he agrees to play a board game Danny has found in the basement during a round of hide-and-seek. However, the boys quickly discover the space-themed game Zathura has some unusual qualities -- a roll of the dice unexpectedly launches the Budwing home into outer space, and Walter and Danny are suddenly fending off menacing robots, angry aliens, and showers of interstellar debris outside the Earth's atmosphere. As the boys try to figure out a way back home, they get some unexpected help from an earthling astronaut (Dax Shepard) who has also lost his way. Based on the book by children's author Chris Van Allsburg -- who also wrote The Polar Express and Jumanji -- Zathura was directed by Jon Favreau, the actor-turned-filmmaker who enjoyed a breakthrough success with Elf.

Zathura is the best movie I have seen so far. It's cool to watch. I got it on the first day it came to DVD like I have seen it on the first day it came to the theatres. My favorite part is the meteor shower. I like it better than Jumanji.

My sister and I went to see this and we thought it wasn't bad but reminded us of Jumanji hence not only does the title of the film refer to the game but of a group of players who must play one weird game and have no choice but to finish it. kristen stewart looked pretty in this and my sis and i thought not only does the guy who played the astronaut (dax shepphard) looked a little like zach braff but he was kinda cute. he was mature in this and actually did a pretty good job. the little brother was adorable but was a little annoying at times. josh hutcherson was also good too and sort of off topic but was very surprised that he's going to play steve leopard in the upcoming cirque du freak movie. good luck to him. anyway this is the story of two bickering brothers who are at home and discover a board game called zathura and that's when they have to get to the end of the game while fighting off aliens and a robot. the ending was nice. this is a movie you can either buy or rent or watch whenever its on tv and fun for the kids.

If it were possible to give this movie 0 stars, I would have done so. The movie is awful in every conceivable way...the acting, the inter-family relationships, the "plot" (to the extent it can be found), the internal consistency (kids manage to "breathe" while in outer space, but adult astronaut needs his space suit). It really isn't worth the time to write a review...but since it currently has 5 stars someone should sound a warning to innocent purchasers.
