Overview

E. D. Buckner's The Immortality of Animals (1903) (Mellen Animal Rights Library Vol. 6) by E. D, Buckner, Rod Preece

Physician Elijah Buckner (1843-1907), in the only book he ever wrote, set forth a Christian argument for recognizing the souls of animals. He sets the concept of the animal soul into the concept of a "Great Chain of Being," ascending from animals, through "lower races" of humanity, and on to (presumably) members of Buckner's "race." This "Great Chain" obligates men to be "kind and merciful" to animals. Preece (political philosophy, Wilfrid Laurier U.) provides a contextual introduction.
