Eagle Death

Kicking in with a crackling explosion of noise, Eagle Death is one of those psych rarities that is simultaneously less and more than it promises, compiling the group's two formally released singles with five unreleased numbers to provide a complete, or as near as possible, studio overview of the group's work. On the one hand, the band itself is one of many psych/garage/heavy blues acts from the time that popped up around the world, and just because the release's context is story-worthy on its own -- Spain in the late years of the Franco dictatorship -- doesn't mean this is unfamiliar territory being explored. On the other hand, the rough-and-ready recording quality of the effort is almost accidentally experimental, with the first song alone overloaded with heavily treated vocals, thin mouth organ and guitars, and then an emergent calm and sweet piano part. The splashing of the cymbals on "Seven Days" and the sudden fade into a backwards conclusion and the clattering cardboard-sounding drums of "One Kind Favor" as a Hammond lurks in the background are two other prime odd but engaging moments, while the semi-jam and breakdown of "Read a Book" are at once another heavy blues thing and a weird collapsing stop-start effort, where the cleaner-sounding vocals provide one of the few through-lines.
