I was delighted to find a book completely unique in Earth Angel. Many books jump in and explain everything from the start; not Earth Angel. This book has an air of mystery that is hard to ignore. It is clear from the start that there is at least one twist to this tale. A fascinating saga this is, although I did mentally stumble over the name of the Mother of the Wind, Vejamate. Being Australian, all I could think of was the Vegemite spread, though this is no fault of the author. In other circumstances, the name would be beautiful. For me, personally and perhaps for other Australian readers, it provided a chuckle. The mix of magic and technology is rather interesting and captivating. Charlie does a fantastic job of combining the two equally, without overwhelming or befuddling. Characters are so realistic and believable that I felt their emotions as I read; scenes are so vivid that I was absorbed and enthralled, enchanted by the very magic woven in the tale. Charlie knows how to balance drama, action, emotion and humour. One other thing I noticed, and appreciated, that seems unique to Earth Angel was the fact that there were many times where this could have stopped to become several smaller books. Having a toddler, I highly appreciate the slight dips of drama to allow life to intrude, without being robbed of the dramatic climax in overall story. A story that rewards the reader with angelic flights of fancy.
