Overview

Scottish/Celtic folk can be lively and danceable, but it can also be tranquil and reflective. A talented young Scottish singer, Elidah Mackenzie definitely favors the latter on this mostly acoustic recording (which was made in Midlothian, Scotland). Whether writing her own lyrics or embracing traditional songs (including "Ghraidh An Tig Thu?," "Latha Chuil-Lodair" and "Cuir Culaibh R.i Asainte"), Mackenzie sings only in Gaelic. The songstress has an exceptionally pretty voice, one that is quite appropriate for this haunting material. Like folk traditions in Ireland and England, this type of music had a strong and powerful influence on Anglo-American folk. In fact, play this CD next to an early Joan Baez album, and it's impossible to miss the similarity.
