Overview

El capitan Alatriste by Arturo Pérez-Reverte

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION "He wasn't the most honest or pious man, but he was a brave one." And so begins the story of Captain Alatriste, a veteran soldier of the regiment of Flanders who scrapes by as a swordsman for hire in seventeenth-century Madrid. Accompanied by a cast of unforgettable characters, his many adventures pitch us headfirst into the world intrigue lived at Court in a corrupt and decadent Spain. Now a major motion picture starring Vigo Mortensen.

The book is simply superb. I'm spanish, and I'm afraid that maybe (and I remark "maybe"), someone from another country will find it spanish-biased, but it's superb. Another thing. The book is not ambiented in the 1700's; it's ambiented in the 1600's (as it is stated clearly in the book). If it had been ambiented in 1700's, then it would be historically wrong, as since 1635 the Spanish prominence was falling and falling and falling...

This is not just a great story superbly told, but you can also take a glimpse at life as it was in 1700's Spain (and the world for that matter). Very exciting and easy to read.
