El rock de mi pueblo
Colombia's roots rocker Carlos Vives returns with the follow-up to his hit Déjame entrar. As always, Colombian rhythms of cumbia and vallenato anchor uptempo dance music delivered with plenty of local flavor. But El rock might be Vives' most expansive album yet since teaming up with Miami majordomos Emilio Estefan, Sebastian Krys, and Andrés Castro. Tracks such as "Santa Marta / Kingston / New Orleans" make plain the circuit of musical influences that unite the ports of the Caribbean basin, proving ska, cumbia, and rock 'n' roll to be kissing cousins. Elsewhere, Vives takes an acoustic turn, delivering a heartfelt ballad, "Voy a olvidarme de mi." Fans of the hunky, patriotic singer will take this one to heart.
