Elements of Chemistry, Part 3: Capture by Penny Reid

Part 3 of Elements of Chemistry
One week.
Manhattan apartment.
Super-hot ex-boyfriend.
...What's the worst that could happen?
It's been nine months since Kaitlyn Parker has seen or heard from Martin Sandeke--nine months and five stages of matter. She's lived through the worst of first-love heartbreak, and is most certainly stronger (and less likely to hide in science cabinets) than ever before.
But now Martin is back. And he wants to be friends. But he's sending mixed signals to the Bunsen burner in Kaitlyn's pants.
Will Martin re-capture Kaitlyn's heart? Can Kaitlyn and Martin ever be just friends? Or, despite an abundance of chemistry, are some bonds just too unstable to endure?

I love Penny Reid and all of her books. But this series now has a special place in my heart. Its a tear-jerking-laugh-out-loud-throw-it-across-the-room good book. What more can I say? Except BUY IT  LOL!

I've read almost all of Penny's book series. This third book was my favorite in this particular set. I like how the characters mature and change throughout the series. I would love to see more long novels vs three short books though.

However, the author has brought new meaning to "beating a dead horse". Too many scenarios were repeatedly rehashed to the point of boredom. The story is good and has a nice plot line, but it needs to be written by a mature adult.

3.5 Stars Reviewed by Francesca and posted at Under The Covers Book Blog We at last come to the serial finale! Will Martin and Kaitlyn finally pull their fingers out and get together? Or will they spend the rest of their days wasting away from unfulfilled love for one another? The torture of the serial is now over and I have thoroughly enjoyed the ride, despite the near constant whinging about the wait between installments. Almost as much as the romance, I have enjoyed seeing Kaitlyn grow up and gain her own strength, even if the catalyst was meeting Martin and having her heartbroken. She has gone from hiding in closets…to doing other much more enjoyable things in closets. And why wouldn’t you want to snuggle with Martin in the closet? Kaitlyn wasn’t the only one has changed over the course of this book, and I loved seeing them together. I can’t explain why this installment of the book didn’t excite me as much as the previous two, maybe it was because I knew how it was going to end. I no longer had the sense that Penny Reid was about to send me spinning and then leave me twirling till the next installment came around. Overall I have really enjoyed reading Elements of Chemistry, despite  being New Adult (blargh) it made me fall in love with all the characters and had me laughing, I can’t wait to see what’s next in the Hypothesis series.

Capture by Penny Reid is the third and final installment in the Elements of Chemistry bundle. As a whole, all three books (Attraction, Heat, and Capture) make up the first story in the Hypothesis series. Lots of words about some awesome books but now to more about the final book in Martin and Kaitlyn's storyline. ***spoilers ahead for the previous two books*** So Martin and Kaitlyn have been apart for around 9 months or so. The split was a necessity after Martin's revenge plot against his father got in the way of Kaitlyn's mother's political career. Kaitlyn chose right over what she viewed as wrong and has been recovering from that decision for months. She changed her majors, realizing that music (as Martin had observed) was her passion and her gift and she is steadily and intelligently and rationally attempting to make her life better. When Martin starts to appear in her life again, past her initial shock and violent panicked reaction, she decides to give him a chance to be friends like he's asking to be. She's trying to put aside her sadness that he only wants to be friends, acknowledging that perhaps she might still want more with Martin Sandeke. Again, the internal monologue and behavioral quirks of these characters are just beyond words for me. Penny's writing style is one that just sucks me in. I have to settle in and just READ her stories. Nothing else matters when the pages are open on a Penny Reid book, they are that DARN good.

Soooo. This is the third and final part to Elements of Chemistry. There are a couple of things that I should make sure that you know first of all.  1) This is NOT a stand alone book. It is the third part of a larger story. If you read them out of order or skip a part the rest won't makes sense.  2) The author has stated that she doesn't encourage reading all three parts back to back. Of course, I didn't listen to the author and read all 3 in one day. I have 2 words for you: Book Hangover. That's right. I am warning you now. Don't come crying to me if you don't listen. And finally 3) This was an awesome story, even if it is New Adult and not one of my typical genres. The first two parts of this story take place during a time frame of just a couple of weeks. This third part is 9 months later. Not really a spoiler, but no, the 9 months has nothing to do with a pregnancy. Just get that out of your head right now. It is a gestation period, but more for the person that Kaitlyn wants to become, not who her parents expect her to become. Truly, I think Kaitlyn and Martin needed the time apart to grow and mature. Their time together was a catalyst for changes in them both, they just needed the time to implement those changes. As I said earlier, this book left me with a serious book hangover. I couldn't read another book for a least a day or two, trapped as I still was in the world created by the author. It is both an amazing and bewildering feeling to be so immersed in a world, that when the book ends you are left feeling slightly adrift.  Needless to say, when a book affects me like that, it deserves no less than 5 stars.

Loved this Series! Favorite Quotes: “I’d always thought it funny that the US government took a recess, like little kids took recess I primary school.  I imagined the Speaker of the House hanging upside down on monkey bars and the majority leader shaking down junior senators for lunch money.” “Musicians are like lightbulbs, they burn hot and bright, but can’t be screwed more than once.” “If he were an actual lightbulb, he’d be a twenty watt fluorescent.  Hard to look at – because he was so pretty – but too dim to make a noticeable difference in any given room.” “Just thinking about him with someone else made me want to throw a month-long drama parade.” “I don’t want a beautiful week with you, I want a beautiful lifetime.” My Review: Penny Reid is a master wordsmith.  That is all I need to say.  I read three books and 568 pages to complete this review and would do it all over again.  Her writing is highly entertaining, multi-layered, seamless, insightful, observant, crisp, witty, and all absorbing.  I enjoyed it so much, it was hard to put my kindle down, so I took it everywhere.  Her characters are complicated, intelligent, and intense.  I adored their clever banter and verbal sparring.  I was sad to see those dreaded words “The End” but was very pleased with the conclusion.

Perfect ending to the book series. Our poor heroine overthinking ways got her in heart trouble. Everything untwisted perfectly. And with dose of humor I expected. Oh and Martin can have my pants anytime. Favorite line:“I don’t want a beautiful week with you. I want a beautiful lifetime.” SWOON!!!!
