While similar geographical origins (Nashville) and beautiful vocal male-female harmonies immediately earn Elenowen comparisons to the Civil Wars, the rich vocal chemistry of married couple Josh and Nicole Johnson is unique in that it fronts a wider range of instrumentation. This EP, which follows up their 2010 debut full-length Pulling Back the Veil, an appearance on The Voice, and several single releases, begins with a percussive midtempo track ("Flying for the First Time") that backs its romantic expressions with a mix of drums, dreamy ambience, and classical touches. "Blood and Bones" veers away from the acoustic niceties, edging into harmonic pop
ock territory with all the melodic fire of Lady Antebellum. The hypnotic "Head to My Heart" combines the best of both these worlds, blending country ballad sensibilities with true folk leanings. The only true Civil Wars-like tune is "Bittersweet," a sparse, dreamy acoustic piece (with subtle ambience) that lets the focus fall to the ethereal wistfulness of the Johnsons' individual and combined vocals. It's roots rock, country, bluesy folk -- whatever you call it, their beautiful harmonies make it magic.
