Overview

If you enjoy dark, psychological horror - inclusive of disturbing nightmares and ghosts - don't miss this haunting story of a father's downward spiral into despair and questionable madness...

'When his six-year-old daughter Seren starts talking of a ghostly woman who visits her room each night, young widower John Gimmerick isn’t too concerned. After all she already has an imaginary friend. But when his own nightmares begin to merge with reality and when unexplainable things start to happen around the house, he realises that by revisiting the home of his childhood he’s stirred up things he’d tried hard to forget – as well as something that should never have been stirred in the first place.

In order to save his little girl from an evil that speaks only of death, reclusive John must now face up to the horrors of his past.

And what he discovers runs deeper and is far more terrifying than he could ever have imagined…'

Reviewed by Kim Anisi for Readers' Favorite A father slowly loses his mind in Emergence by R.H. Dixon - or at least he thinks he does. He is used to his daughter talking to her imaginary friend, but what he did not expect was that there was more than just a creative mind behind that friend. John soon has to learn that there are more things than can be seen by the eyes, and that his own past could mean a fatal end to him and his daughter. While visiting his mother's house to pet-sit her dog, weird things start to happen, and his daughter's imaginary friend seems to play a vital role in them. Things and people John had tried hard to forget find their way back into his life. And only a person from his past might be able to help John solve the mysteries. Fans of horror that is not over the top will enjoy reading Emergence by R.H. Dixon. The book manages to create a sense of dread without having to use gore and abstruse monstrosities. The evil is more subtle - and while there are some disturbing images, their placement is well done and will be appreciated by readers who will expect some shock value in a novel like this. I enjoyed the pace and setting of the story. It was a nice read, and in some places a bit disturbing (but that is indeed very welcome in a horror story, otherwise it would not be horror!). If I ever come across another book by this author, I won't think twice about reading it.
