Plain but brainy Emily, underappreciated by her handicapped father, has developed some autonomy and emerged a bit from her placid shell while managing the family estate, set deep in the heart of fox-hunting country, while her brother remains missing in the war. Piers Verderan, our hero, has come to Melton for hunting season and is introduced to Emily by a dubious and contrived plot device-- a vulgar and public contretemps with a prostitute. Although Emily is attracted to him, the incident leaves her with grave doubts as to his character; she is slow, about 100 pages too slow, to trust her own heart. The backdrop of the story, fox hunting season, is not uninteresting as a sidelight but serves as an inapt platform for Emily to prove her devotion to Piers. He has familial conflicts, a soiled reputation, and a running conflict with a Bad Hat, not to mention a poor, tortured soul--but Emily feels they can work everything out if she can screw up her courage to ride in a fox hunt. Can she manage it? Can the reader manage to care? Emily has to be tutored, fostered, persuaded, and driven to every act that brings her closer to Piers, yet she is celebrated as brave and daring. Mighty bland reading-the romance has as much fire as a cold gas stove. If you must read it, find a moldering old paperback copy. The prices they're charging for GOOD e-books are too high; let's not encourage publishers to overcharge for these mediocre reissues.
