On a special day with Grandma, Emma and Sara make bread. They learn the difference between white and wheat bread and Grandma tells them about life on the farm. She tells of Harvest Time, when the neighbors from the surrounding farms would come bringing their wagons and tractors. They would help haul the grain from the fields. It was a day for the whole family, the farmer's wives brought pies and bread to add to the delicious lunch. Children carried water to the men and set tables for the noon meal.

Fun for young readers, Harvest Time brings color and interest to learning about bread making, the history of grain harvesting, and the important contributions that everyone, including children, made on a working farm. Beautifully illustrated, this warm story connects older generations with kids today. Who doesn't like to play in the straw and a good glass of lemonade?!

My granddaughters, Emily, age 9, and Sidney, age 10, really enjoyed this book and had the following comments:
Emily's favorite part was learning about the "ancient" ways of harvesting grain and the illustrations. She was impressed how the children got to help do things at harvest time. She thought it was neat that their Grandma let Emma and Sara help in baking bread, and she thought it would be nice if in later books Grandma, Emma and Sara made different things and told stories about those things. Sidney liked learning about how a farm worked a long time ago and how everyone pitched in to help. She said the pictures made the story easier to understand, and made it fun for children to learn about farm life.

I enjoyed reading her book and thought it would be a good book for city children to have the opportunity to read. They will be able to envision life on a farm.

Emma And Sara Learn About Harvest Time is an entertaining children's book packed full of interesting details about harvesting grain and old fashioned farm life. It would make a great basis or accompaniment to a class or home school lesson on agriculture or history. This book will appeal to kids who enjoy the Little House on the Prairie television series or books.
