Set in the nineteenth century and - as the title of the book suggests - it tells the story of an emperor who is exiled from the South American nation of Surmer and transported back to his native England. Romantic entanglements, assignation plots, political intrigue, it has it all. So often you hear people say “I couldn’t put the book down”: well Simon Firth’s Emperor in Exile is one such book. A fast paced read that never allows the reader a chance to draw breath. The author’s research is meticulous and attention to detail exceptional. Firth excels in his powers of description which transport the reader into every scene. Underscored with literary references such as Plutarch, Richter, Uhland, every sentence is lovingly hand stitched with immense care into a delicate, rich tapestry of words.
