Overview

I was known as the traitor's daughter.

When I was five years old, my father was tortured, branded with the letter 'Z', then beaten and left for dead. The grueling punishment for his crime was a reminder to all others who dared threaten the Russian's reign.

I was the young girl left behind. A living piece of the traitorous puzzle the Russian leader tried so diligently to ignore.

Until I grew up. No longer could he deny how much my existence had always been intertwined with his. And in order to survive the life I was thrown into, I was forced to learn my place inside of it.

Vlad Zalesky was a tyrant to the lost.

I hated him.

He was a terror of mass destruction.

I was afraid of him.

He was a tormentor of the weak.

But not far beneath the venomous man's outward indifference was something else.

Vlad Zalesky carried secrets of unrestrained burden. I wanted to know those secrets.

And because of my decisions, someone in our family had to pay.

Empires and Kings by A.C. Bextor is the first book in her Mafia trilogy and a solid five star read! It was the first book I have read by this writer and I was and am smitten! At the time of writing this review, I have already devoured the second book and I cannot wait for the third one to come out! I hope Carrie is not going to make us wait too long! Yes, you can say that this book (and series) is a romanticized organized crime story but I do not care! The way the writer draws us in and the rollercoaster we are on from the page one, it is something. And yes, this book is dark and brutal, from the page one … the lives of Vlad and Klara and all the others in their ‘family’, all the angst and all the secrets … The complexity of characters, the surprising vulnerability of someone who appears so cold and in control (obviously I am talking about Vlad) when it comes to the people he loves … but let’s start from the beginning – Klara met Vlad for the first time when she was 5 years old and he was torturing her father who was betraying ‘the family’. She has lived with the Zalesky family ever since … Vlad is the head of the ‘Russian family’ in Chicago and as you can imagine, he carries many secrets. If you like mafia stories and are curious about Vlad and Klara, I invite you to join us in the world the writer has created where no feeling stays untouched and unfelt and where you are not able to put the book down until you get to the end and then, most likely, like me, you will go and get the next one. I was lucky; I started reading over the weekend so I had time to read also the next one! Carrie, please do NOT make us wait too long for the third one!

Empires and Kings (A Mafia Duet Book 1) by A.C. Bextor 5 Stars Oh My!! Did that just happen? This book ended and I wasn't even close to being ready for it to end.. Need book 2 like right now!! I don't even know where to begin with this review, I loved this book so so much, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. Her story building started on page 1 and never stopped climbing. The flow was perfect and a lot of times when I have read any kind of mafia stories I end up lost because there are so many people in play and so much going on. With everything going on in this story I never had to go back to figure out what was happening or who was who. This author kept all the details clear and so very easy to follow. As hard and cold as Vlad seems on the outside, I loved when this book showed his POV and showed what was inside, and as wrong as it may seem, Klara being in this family always seemed right. I loved her strength and her defying side, I love that as scared as she was a lot of the time, she never backed down. The unanswered questions and hints of what is to come in the future of this family, left me with so much excitement to read the next in this series and also to check out everything else this author has available. I'm so curious about so many of the people in this book, but I think right now my biggest curiosity lies with who is Elevent? It kind of seems like there's a lot more there then what we know. This is my first book by this author but will most definitely not be my last. Loved Loved Loved it!!!
