Couldn't get past the very beginning when the king hits and rapes the 16 year old heroine. I don't expect a Disney experience in these stories, but a brutal rape, though luckily not completely described, is not my idea of a fairytale.

I enjoyed reading this version of Beauty and the Beast except for the rape scene and the last chapter. The book did not need either.

A fun romp through a fairy tale with quite a bit of turn around. Highly entertaining.

This was a great book. I enjoyed reading it as it may pulls you into the story as if you were right there on the Isle

I love fairytale retellings, especially Beauty and the Beast—and this is a unique version. Zuleika's enchantress mother has died, so when King Thorn comes seeking her, Zuleika goes with him in her place. He requests a curse to place on an enemy, and then forces himself violently upon her. She flees, and ends up in the land ruled by Thorn's brother, Prince Varden, who has himself been cursed to be in the form of a beast. I liked the magic, and there were a couple of nice twists. However, it took the main characters a long time to figure out stuff that was obvious to the reader, which made things drag a bit. Because of the rape scene, this book is suited for older teens and up.

I liked the story but it made no sense to me, that it took Zuleika so long to figure things out. Of course it would have made for a much shorter story if she had figured it out sooner. Still it was frustrating. I also would have liked more details into the villain's motive for doing what he did, and more background into the relationship between him and the hero.
