Overview

The End of Mr. Y by Scarlett Thomas

A cursed book. A missing professor. Some nefarious men in gray suits. And a dreamworld called the Troposphere? Ariel Manto has a fascination with nineteenth-century scientists—especially Thomas Lumas and The End of Mr. Y, a book no one alive has read. When she mysteriously uncovers a copy at a used bookstore, Ariel is launched into an adventure of science and faith, consciousness and death, space and time, and everything in between. Seeking answers, Ariel follows in Mr. Y’s footsteps: She swallows a tincture, stares into a black dot, and is transported into the Troposphere—a wonderland where she can travel through time and space using the thoughts of others. There she begins to understand all the mysteries surrounding the book, herself, and the universe. Or is it all just a hallucination? With The End of Mr. Y, Scarlett Thomas brings us another fast-paced mix of popular culture, love, mystery, and irresistible philosophical adventure.

All in all, I had no idea what to expect from this book. From start to finish it was a complete mind-blower. The main female protagonist was pretty well developed with an almost Indiana-Jones persona. She goes off on a mission to fully understand this particular book and mystery surrounding it. Abandoning her mundane apt for the expanses of the mind-space is absolutely phenomenal. Her interactions with the characters in real life and in this "mind-space" are both thrilling and confusing. A full on, in-depth look at the physics of mind reading and mind travel was both introspective and mind-expanding lol. Highly recommended, one I couldn't put down and didn't want to! Good for a rainy afternoon or just week long intermittent reading :)

Unconventional and mind-bending, this story was a beautiful read. Scarlett Thomas always makes me feel like I'm learning something new while keeping it organic to the story she is weaving. Whether you're a literature lover, a physics dabbler, a philosophy enthusiast, or enjoy the mixing of magic and science fiction, you will find something here to enjoy. Also, I absolutely fell in love with Ariel. You often hear complaints about failed attempts at creating a Strong Female Character/Lead or a Flawed But Sympathetic Character, but Scarlett Thomas has a way with bringing them to life. I always love a Thomas female lead, but Ariel is probably one of my favorite characters from any form of media ever. She just feels so tangible. She's not perfect, but still tries to do what's right, and all the while you can't help but root for her on her quest to solve the mysteries of the mind and this thing we call reality. I only have praise for this book. Go in with an open mind, leave with the universe.

I am not a real science fiction buff, but this book grabbed me from the first page, and I read it in record time! I have read many books, and this is one I actually reread again and again because each time I find something different to think about.

I loved, loved this book! I have become bored with so many fiction books lately, but this was completely diferent. From the very start I was hooked. This book really causes you to reexamine the way you look at the world and question everything around you. This author is great, but it was this book in particular that got me interested in quantum physics. This book is HIGHLY recommended!
