Secret societies. Battles and alliances. Unique powers and humanity’s survival in the balance… This story has it all. Follow three characters whose immortal histories are intertwined and will only become more so. Aleria is suffering from amnesia. Her opening chapter had me 100% immersed. What a way to start a story! She’s a strong young woman who must stumble through the politics and relationships around her to figure out who she can trust. Ryan has taken up the calling of a doctor, but his past is riddled with deeds so dark it’s amazing the sun doesn’t burn him. He struggles with a nature that counteracts his conscious decision to live a selfless life. Nick… He was my favorite. He is who he is, and even with a loose mouth and wild abandon to anything that will shorten his suffering, he’s a hopeless romantic I just kept cheering for. These three are trapped at the heart of a conflict between two opposing factions who protect mortals. With people pulling the strings around them, they fight to keep their heads above water, to stay alive, and to reconcile their pasts with the developing feelings/political complications of the present. This was a book very clearly penned out of love. The reader can’t help but feel that and it carried me from chapter to chapter until the end. But be warned, this is the beginning to a series. It will leave you twiddling your thumbs until the next installment. Content warning: Strong language. Violence. One open door bedroom scene. Insinuation.
