The Gores have created a comprehensive and authoritative history of English period design that deals with every style and period from the Norman era to the present while briefly treating domestic and social history. For example, they include chapters titled ``Gallic Influence and Gothic Ascendancy'' and ``Tudor Comfort and Renaissance Detail'' that discuss tapestries, floor and wall coverings, doors and windows, furniture, fireplaces, and objets d'art . They also explain the influence of architects and designers and highlight recurring themes in the history of English decoration. Illustrations of prints and paintings enhance the details of deco ration shown in the beautifully photo graphed restorations. Included are a glossary, chronological chart, and listing of the houses and their locations. This overview of English household decoration is a worthy addition to all decorative art collections.-- Judith Yankielun Lind, Roseland Free P.L., N.J.
