There is a tremendous need for a simple, short, comprehensive book about money, comparable to "The One Minute Manager," "Life's Little Instruction Book," and "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff." A book about the forest, not the trees. At the same time, the book must be believable, with an attitude that isn't patronizing, with goals and rules that are attainable, and supporting a range of value systems and lifestyles.

Personal finance is a great frustration for many, many of us. We know we have to take care of it, but money appears complicated and intimidating. We look for advice, and find too much -- books that are hundreds of pages long covering dozens of topics, a shelf full of magazines that change every money and seem to provide both too much and not enough. We get the message that you have to be an expert even to start out. That approach is wrong-headed and dangerous.

Americans are faced today with increasing responsibility for managing their own future and an incredible (and distracting) range of choices to get the job done. In a former era of more stability and fewer tools, maybe it was easier. Today, it's hard. A lot of people are in immediate trouble, and many more are creating future problems by acting without awareness of how all their major decisions fit together. They want a simple, short guidebook.

The time is right for this book. We've entered a period of "growing up" about money. At the national level, we've balanced the federal budget, and even begun to talk about Social Security. At a global level, the problems from Wall Street to Asia remind us that boom times and easy credit catch up on the players, often leaving a bad hangover. At a personal level, the early Baby Boomers can start to see what they have to do if they ever want to retire. The press attention to that problem -- whatever the leading edge of Boomers is doing gets press attention -- will inspire younger people to pay more attention to money issues earlier in their lives.

When you want to learn what to do, you want to start with something small and comprehensive that helps you succeed. ENOUGH MONEY! is that
