I was to teach a slave.
Marcus, a gladiator in my father’s ludus, was compelled to my presence to learn of Rome’s gods, her legends. When first he came, fear consumed me - fear of this silent, resentful slave who burned with his anger.
Time, though, changes much. Marcus softened and I grew unafraid. As we became closer, I grew more than merely unafraid – I grew to love him. Never did I think we would be separated.
I was wrong.

This was a very good book, but I found my heart aching for the main characters a lot. Being forced to be a slave and her forced into marriage where she had no control over her life not even over her own body. It was lovely when Marcus and Lucia found each other again. I loved how Marcus continued after Lucia knowing he wanted her still after so many years. I enjoyed this book and the ending was happy, but it had the echo of heart ache even in the end. I look forward to reading other books from this author.
