In one of the best young adult science fiction, post-apocalyptic series out there with the ability to enthrall all ages and genders, N.W. Harris’ The Last Orphans has new addition! Enslaved continues the saga of what happens when all of the adults are gone and only the children remain. Against all odds, one group under the leadership of Shane and his friends have stood against aliens attempting to “harvest” the children of Earth to be bound into slavery, empty slates to be programmed to fight and die for the aliens. These kids have shown superior bravery, terrified or not and have taken down a massive transport ship in the process, but their victory wasn’t complete, many of their own have been taken, including Kelly, who means more to Shane than just a valuable leader and asset. Kelly has Shane’s heart and he will do anything to get her back. But is his obsession with saving Kelly destroying the heart of his young warriors? Is it time for Shane to realize he cannot walk away from those who derive their strength from him, who look to him for guidance and a cool head amid the tsunami of uncertainty and loss? No, he didn’t ask for the role, but it is his, more pressure than anyone should have to shoulder and he needs to make a decision and live with the consequences. While Kelly becomes another victim of the mind control of the aliens, her own strength of will and a special link between her and Shane may be key to setting the imprisoned children free or getting them killed. Are their dream conversations secure or could someone else be listening? Will Kelly betray those she once took a stand with? Another battle is in the offing, but the casualties of war are rising, human lives are being snuffed out long before their time. Once again, it is time to ask for the impossible or all will be lost. When an author like N.W. Harris comes along who writes from the heart and is able to bring a “safe for all” tale to the table, filled with action, indecision and raw from-the-gut bravery, I say put it in the hands of young readers and start them on the road to new worlds. Ignite and fuel their imaginations, show them role models to identify with and put them in the middle of it all to live side by side in a world where invincibility of youth is their greatest asset. Mr. Harris knows how to set a stage, build (and destroy) a world and call upon his characters to rise above the rest while he breathes life into every page. Each addition to the series is top notch, each characters comes to life in every way as life gives them more than they can handle and they rebel at that thought and fight on, anyway. I received an ARC edition from N.W. Harris in exchange for my honest review.

An Amazing Book Georgia Shane and his friends managed to survive the first major attack against the enemy. They destroyed the alien ships that came to harvest the children of Earth and turn them into slaves. The ship that Kelly was on is the one ship that managed to escape. Shane is determined to do whatever it takes to save Kelly but if he turns his back on his friends he takes the chance of jeopardizing the whole mission. Kelly’s mind is invaded by the enemy and she is turned into a slave soldier. Any order they give her she will follow even if that order is to kill her friends, her little sister and Shane. As Kelly performs heinous tasks under the directions of her new masters she is trapped and helpless in her own body. With each new direction her sanity and desire to live fade a little more. Shane is ready to make a rescue attempt as soon as he is home. When he finally gets there it is to find that Kelly is there too commanding an army of human slave soldier and she is determined to make him join her ranks. Now Shane has to see if he can rescue Kelly before she gets to her sister or Kelly just might end up helping enslave the rest of humanity. This is proving to be a very additive series. With each book the series gets better and better. While readers will be thrilled to find out there is to be another book they will end up disappointed to find out they have to wait for it. The action is pretty much non-stop and makes for a book that readers won’t want to put down for any reason. It is also a series that stays with readers long after they finish each book. It will be interesting to see just where the series ends up and how it gets there. The characters are very well written and move the story along very well. This is definitely one series that should be read.

Enslaved is book three in The Last Orphans series by N.W. Harris. This book was generously provided to me by the author for an honest review. Where do I even start? From the very beginning of this series, we have gotten to know and respect Shane, Kelly, and their friends. They have persevered through so many horrific circumstances. But throughout it all, Shane has kept his head. He never wanted to be the leader of all the young survivors. But from the beginning, they all looked to him. “It seemed everyone had decided Shane was the boss, not just the Americans. He’d never asked to take care of anybody and felt an upwelling of guilt for wanting to shy away from the task now. Until Kelly was safe, he didn’t want to think about anything else. Shane was the glue that stuck them together.” All of the transports trying to take the kids off of earth to use them as soldiers have been destroyed, except one. Kelly, Jules, and several others from their team have been captured. They are completely controlled by the Anunnaki except that their own thoughts are still alive inside them. They know what they are being forced to do but can do nothing to stop themselves. Their bodies are completely under their control. We get our first real look into the mind of the enemy. General Athos is aboard the enemy ship, Pegasus, and we learn more about the politics of his civilization. General Athos is willing to do anything to promote himself and his nephew, Pelros, by succeeding to enslave all of the remaining teens on earth. He has developed a new way of using the slave soldiers he has to enslave more. So he sends his nephew and ten slave soldiers, including Kelly and Jules, to earth, to implement his plan. Shane is constantly doubting himself and his decisions. All he really wants is to save Kelly. He fears he is becoming too jaded to all the violence. “Nothing Shane wanted to say in that moment would’ve done any good. He was too absorbed in his own crap. He was destroying his team.” Kelly finds herself back on earth and is horrified as to what she is forced to do. But her slave persona obeys all orders. She can do nothing to stop it. She is leading the enemy to her friends. Shane and his team and Kelly, Jules and the enemy are both headed for the epic showdown. Can Shane save the girl he loves or will Kelly help the enemy to enslave the people she loves? This third book is crazy intense from the beginning to the end, just as the first two books are. I feel like I’ve gotten to know these kids so well throughout this series. I can’t imagine what the author has in store for us in the fourth book and I can’t wait to find out.
