Overview

Ngaio Marsh was, among other things, a well-respected theatrical producer (having started out as an actress), and her passion for and knowledge of the theater was displayed in many of Alleyn’s adventures. In Enter a Murderer, the Inspector has been invited to an opening night, a new play in which two characters quarrel and then struggle for a gun, with predictably sad results. Even sadder, the gun was not, in fact, loaded with blanks.

I love the "cozy" mysteries of Ngaio Marsh -- and this is one of my favorites. Alleyn & Fox & Bathgate are an engaging group. And all of Marsh's books transport me back to a world that is so different from today. Although I was born much too late to have known that world myself, her books make me feel like I've been there. If you like earlier 20th century atmosphere, engaging characters, and a good mystery, I highly recommend this book.

Roderick Alleyn, Scotland Yard detective, accepts an invitation to the theatre from Nigel Bathgate, a journalist friend. It turns out to be a case of being in the right place at the right time when I murder is committed on stage in front of him. I always enjoy reading the Golden Age authors and Marsh in particular.
