Enter Title Here by Rahul Kanakia

I'm your protagonist-Reshma Kapoor-and if you have the free time to read this book, then you're probably nothing like me.

Reshma is a college counselor's dream. She's the top-ranked senior at her ultra-competitive Silicon Valley high school, with a spotless academic record and a long roster of extracurriculars. But there are plenty of perfect students in the country, and if Reshma wants to get into Stanford, and into med school after that, she needs the hook to beat them all.

What's a habitual over-achiever to do? Land herself a literary agent, of course. Which is exactly what Reshma does after agent Linda Montrose spots an article she wrote for Huffington Post. Linda wants to represent Reshma, and, with her new agent's help scoring a book deal, Reshma knows she'll finally have the key to Stanford.

But she's convinced no one would want to read a novel about a study machine like her. To make herself a more relatable protagonist, she must start doing all the regular American girl stuff she normally ignores. For starters, she has to make a friend, then get a boyfriend. And she's already planned the perfect ending: after struggling for three hundred pages with her own perfectionism, Reshma will learn that meaningful relationships can be more important than success-a character arc librarians and critics alike will enjoy.

Of course, even with a mastermind like Reshma in charge, things can't always go as planned. And when the valedictorian spot begins to slip from her grasp, she'll have to decide just how far she'll go for that satisfying ending. (Note: It's pretty far.)

In this wholly unique, wickedly funny debut novel, Rahul Kanakia consciously uses the rules of storytelling-and then breaks them to pieces.

ENTER TITLE HERE is a work of evil genius that will be especially appreciated by students currently competing in the college admissions rat race. Reshma Kapoor is a Silicon Valley high school senior who employs unhealthy and unsavory means to achieve her all-consuming end: admission to Stanford. She’s found the hook that will make her application stand out when an essay she published in the Huffington Post earns her an email from a literary agent: “If you were to someday write a novel, I’d love to read it.” Boom, goal-oriented Reshma has a new aim: secure a contract with this agent, and write a novel to be under submission (or maybe even sold) in time for Stanford’s Early Action deadline. That novel is ENTER TITLE HERE. Reshma scopes out a brief synopsis in her head, epiphany and all, and then writes a “SEPTEMBER TO-DO LIST” of the experiences she needs to have to write the novel convincingly: make a friend, go on a date, attend a party, get a boyfriend, have sex. In the pages that follow, she sets about checking off each item. And while it’s not on her list, be warned: no way is she going to loosen her grasp on her school’s valedictorian spot. She won it by hook and by crook, and keeping it is as essential to her plans (and her self-image) as writing the novel is. This was a can't stop reading, train wreak, antihero story I only put down when I absolutely had to do other stuff. Reads easily and quickly while packing a strong punch. I felt a vibe of modern, amped-up version of Jane Austen's Emma. In a very twisted way and I really really liked it.

Wow...just, wow. I'm not sure what I was expecting when I cracked open ENTER TITLE HERE, but what transpired over the pages ended up being SO much more! Reshma, the protagonist, quickly became one of those characters I wanted to hate -- from the start, she was selfish, vindictive, and didn't care how many people she stepped on while she made her way to the top...all of them were pretty much only in her way, anyhow. But I found it impossible to hate her. In fact, I flew through the pages, realizing I was cheering for her every step of the way! So much story to love here, as Reshma's character arc emulates that of the main character she's writing about in her own novel. In particular, are Rahul's fantastic one-liners on exactly what it takes to write YA -- which had me laughing and nodding my head like an idiot, all at the same time! In the end, this book shares the importance of self-discovery and how your actions can affect others in ways you may not realize...and ultimately, what you choose to do about that. ENTER TITLE HERE is a must read for everyone, and should be added to your TBR immediately -- I promise, you will not be disappointed!
