About the Author

Dr. Kiran Macha was educated as a physician in India. He has practiced medicine in India and the Unit ed Kingdom. After earning his MPH, he joined the faculty of the University of North Florida, School of Nursing in Jacksonville where he has taught and managed research projects with Advanced Practice Nursing students in both primary care and anesthesiology. During this period he became convinced of the value of advanced nursing practice in maintaining optimum quality and access to patient care. As the DNP curriculum was developed, the UNF faculty group became increasingly aware that current textbooks in epidemiology were mostly constructed from the viewpoint of medicine and public health. There was a need to create a text dealing with the topics related to epidemiology that would approach issues from the advanced nursing perspective. He chose to establish a group of experts who could fill that need and the concept of this text was born.

Dr. John McDonough is both a family nurse practitioner as well as certified registered nurse anesthetist. He is currently a full professor and School of Nursing Associate Director for Graduate Studies at the University of North Florida where he is responsible for all MSN and DNP programs. Dr. McDonough clinical and academic experiences include such areas as practice in large urban and small rural communities in both and teaching in both nursing and medical school in the Unit ed States and Europe. In addition to his civilian experience, he is a retired U.S. Army Nurse Corps officer having served in times of both peace and conflict.
