Overview

Epiphany: The Best of Chaka Khan, Vol. 1

Epiphany collects Khan's greatest hits, collecting the cream from her uneven albums. Although it lacks her '70s hits with Rufus (save for a live version of "Tell Me Something Good,"), there is plenty of strong stuff here, and most of it has aged well. "Ain't Nobody," still sounds fresh and Khan's "I'm Every Woman" dwarfs Whitney Houston's better known remake. She also handles the jazzier "End of a Love Affair" and "And the Melody Still Lingers On (Night in Tunisia) capably. Khan also works nicely with Me'Shell Ndegeocello on "Never Miss Your Water, a strong new tune that brought her back to the spotlight.

On this album, Chaka Khan proves she can sing anything. She's the only working American diva of any age who can. Her control and support are astonishing and, though she recalls Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, she makes every song her own.
