About the Author

Hudson A. Tannis was born in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and came to the United States when he was just a young boy. After high school, he earned an Associate's Degree from Queens Borough Community College and a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing from York College.

After college, while working at Toys R Us, he got a chance to observe how children socialize and interact. He noticed what made children happy, what piqued their curiosity, and what bored them. He realized that he wanted to help stimulate their creativity and use art to brighten people's lives.
Several years ago while working on the trains of the Long Island Railroad, first as an assistant conductor and then as a conductor, he started to hand out “souvenirs” to children to make their train experience more enjoyable and to help them pass the time. The “souvenirs” are hand sculpted seat check tickets. He reshapes the rectangular piece of paper into whatever comes to mind – a bear, a rabbit, an alien, a motorcycle, and more. He began creating a library of art, each piece created belonging to a unique series based on theme, difficulty, love, or just fun.
Then in December 2007, while handing out one of his works to a young girl and talking with the girl and her parents about art, the girl's mother happened to be an art teacher, and she took a great interest in the conversation. The teacher was intrigued by his work, his passion for art, and his interest in educating children. She later invited him to her school to speak to children about art in a classroom setting.
At the time, his art included a total of five different series, with each new series being progressively more intricate than the last. Currently his art creations include sixteen unique series. Each series is a work in progress, constantly evolving, limited only by his imagination and creativity.
In 2011 he formed Tannis, Inc. and launched the brand SeatCheck Art. He currently conducts presentations and seminars about art, and sells clothing under the SeatCheck Art brand featuring images of his artwork. His plans for the future include the completion of the existing art series and the creation of even more spectacular, almost unimaginable pieces. His art is created in positive and negative space and the pieces will continue to be hand crafted using nothing more than a simple work ticket punch.
